Per the request from Red, here's how to make a whipped fish hook
1 - Take a small log, approx 1" in diameter and 2" long, it helps if it's straight grained and splits easily, but not essential

2 - Split the wood and make yourself a small plank approx 1/4" thick

3 - Split this in half

4 - and whittle it into this shape

5 - select your barb, i used a bamboo skewer, but bone, thorns and a whole host of things also work

6 -figure out the length of barb you want and cut slightly over size, whittle the side that will face the shaft square for a better fit

7 - start to whip it over, i hope the photo shows the process, i tried to video it, but the hook was small and my hands are big, I'll try again if people want me to?, the whipping is a simple one and a study of the photo should show how it's done, as with whipping things in general, the beginning is the hardest part

8 - when you reach the top, whip up the shank and do a couple of tucks on the cord to secure

9 - a completed hook

and all the steps in one photo

hope this helps peeps?.
