attaching ALICE pack to MOLLE Frame. A K.I.S.S. tutorial
« on: June 11, 2012, 02:44:26 PM »
I recently got an ALICE pack with the intentions of doing the HELLCAT mod

When I started really looking into it I realized it was more work than I wanted to do, and I really like my MOLLE Gen 4 frame.

So I decided to attach ALICE to MOLLE, but I couldn't find anything online about how to do that using the standard Gen 4 frame. So I figured it out myself.

Turns out the ALICE matches up beautifully with the MOLLE Frame, all you need is a 6' piece of parachute cord. Okay enough talk, here's the pics. This tutorial assumes that the straps and kidney belt are already attached properly...

1. Tie the string to the frame on the 4th slot down. I attached it using a round turn with two half-hitches.

2. Run the cord between the pad and the ALICE. Come from the bottom to the top.

3. Run the cord down through the diagonal slot at the top of the frame, located next to the attachment slot for the load lifters.

4. Run the cord across and up through the other diagonal slot, going back towards the pack

5. Run the cord down under the pad

6. Down the inside slot (4th hole down again) and then up through the outside slot.

7. Back up underneath the pad

8. and down through the diagonal slot again

9. back across and through the other diagonal

10. and back down under the pad again.

11. run down through the inside slot and up through the outside slot again

12. finish off with round turn and two half hitches

Now attach the bottom using the built in straps at the sides of the bottom of the alice pack: attach to MOLLE frame at the 5th slot up from the bottom.

13. go down the inside slot and up the outside slot

attach to pack and tighten

14. repeat for other side, enjoy.

Well done.

That ruck looks like it cleaned up nice, I hope you get years of service out of it.
Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

BigHat, excuse my ignorance please, but being Canadian and non-military, I don't really know the terminology of these different packs.  Is there anything you (or someone else?) could tell me to help me understand these packs a little better?

no need to be excused, KK.

ALICE is the old issued army pack for the U.S..   ALICE stands for All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment. Common complaints about the ALICE are that the original shoulder straps and belt were uncomfortable. In this tutorial the only ALICE equipment I used was the medium rucksack (they make a medium and a large)

MOLLE is the new issued army pack for the U.S.. MOLLE stands for Modular Light Load-Bearing Equipment. My issue with the MOLLE pack is the rucksack itself. I like everything else about it. In this tutorial I used a MOLLE frame, hipbelt (kidney belt), and shoulder straps.

When I say Gen-4 frame I mean the 4th generation MOLLE frame. It sucked at first and they've refined it 3 times since the original, and are now on model #4.

The HELLCat mod mentioned at the beginning of the post is a way of attaching the MOLLE shoulder straps and kidney belt to the ALICE frame and pack. The difference with what I'm doing is I'm using the MOLLE frame instead of the ALICE frame, all of the other parts are the same.

Hope this helps give a little background.

Thanks man!  That answers everything.  Great explanation.

I'm looking for a kind of bigger pack - I have a cheaper Chinese knock off some... I dunno what, really, and I saw this post and really liked the look of that frame and pack!  Outstanding post.  Thanks again.

As an Old Scoutmaster, I must say that it is SOOOOOO refreshing to see the the 'round turn and two half-hitches' being tied correctly again 8)   It's been a long time, my friend!

yeah it's funny when people forget the whole "round turn" part, isn't it?
