4 days 3 nights on the Altamaha River GA
« on: April 01, 2013, 07:15:45 AM »
Kellty and I joined a few GA paddlers and did some of this huge river last week.  It was an amazing trip with super people.

Kelly and I left a few days early and camped at the beach.  She's not a cold weather person and it was in the 30's.  She kept asking, "It's not gonna be THIS cold on the river is it?"  LOL.

The put=in and it's hectic last minute gear checks.  "Did I bring my..."

Camp life.

This fine rig belonged to a fella that hadn't camped since like, Viet Nam.  He fell right in step with the old hands at camping.  He packed perfectly.  Never seen somebody do near as well after that long away.  Nice job Scott!

Winchester's homemade charcoaling rig.  Niiiiice!

W. cooking fried spiced apples on it.  We had steaks with them.

More camplife.

That night W. did the double dutch with chicken and rice and cornbread on his charcoal rig.

It's mighty fine paddling on a mighty big river.

So we stopped on the third day at this county fishcamp/boatramp for hotshowers and a snack.
um......we managed to behave somewhat.  We didn't PARK there. LOL

Smoked stuffed porkchops that night. drool.

Lat day in Rifle cut.  A canal dug by slaves to cut off a looong way around.  They did it to get goods in and out quicker to the plantations up stream.  I can't imagine how terrible it must have been to dig through this place by hand.

Yes,  Max got plenty of attention from everybody on the trip.  He hardly ate his food though.  Obviously somebody was sneaking him treats the whole way down.

Great trip.  Great people.  Great times.

At least it's not a femur through the pelvis.

Thumbs up on a Suwannee trip.  3 hung.  4 tented.  That number was just about all the camps could handle.  The sandbars were all underwater.  HIGH water.  And it was cookin' downstream

Great trip Tony.  That looked like a great time.  That pic with you and the signs had me laughing.  Glad you all got out and had fun.

Looked like you had a great time man. Kelly doesn't look so happy though.
Never though of being able to do two DU's on top of each other like that. Pretty ingenious.
I'm down for the Suwanee too.

Nice looking trip ..

Is that the same "Scott" who let us use his property for the Chickenstick event?

Chucks cooking apparatus looks strangely familiar  >:D ...way too clean though, so glad to see it being put to good use.

Wow, I'm envious. :(

But I'm way more happy for ya than envious! Great looking trip, with food, friends and your dog. Does it get any better than that?

That's the Scott.  He's a real character.  Trying to get him and Winchester to come to Kicco.  W. is a probably.  PoorRichard is busy.  I can't post the majority of the campfire talk due to adult content.  Scott cracked everybody up.

BTW.  Winchester reminded me...those of us that are Kracaneuners AND Fatwoodsman are called FatKrackers.

Looks like a great trip. Those Georgia boys usually put up an awesome food spread on there trips.

Was there any boat wakes for Max to chase?

We saw very few boats.  The river had flooded most of the beaches as well.  We literally had to seal launch off a bank at the last camp.

I envy (in a good way) all the trips you take.  The weather up here in IL is just starting to break and campouts should be picking up for me and my family and friends.

Thanks!

The river was so high, fast, and full of stuff I blew off fishing for other things.  It has monster flathead catfish, next year I may bring my salt water rig and giver a shot.

That trip looked like a fun one!  :)   I liked the sign pix...  especially with Max laying under there.  LOL

Do you guys designate one person to be the cook on trips like this?

On particularly rough days when I'm sure I can't possibly endure, I like to remind myself that my track record for getting through bad days so far is 100% and that's pretty good.

No.  The cooks volunteer all by themselves.  There's alot of sharing, but also sometimes vegans, vegetarians, special diets, and picky eaters who do their own thing.  Some just like to cook for themselves.  It's all very low key and always alot of food.

For the ones I've gone on, you have to pretty much sign up in advance, or fight for a chance to cook for the group. There's just way too much cooking talent in the Georgia group & they are all too happy to showcase their talents over the campfire.

Personally, I know when I'm outclassed, so I just stick with bringing equipment or adult party-favors, to avoid embarrassing myself with those guys.

Now that looks like a fine time. I can't get any of my "canoeing" buddies to going canoeing with me...much less an overnighter. You inspire me to be more selfish! I know you have answered this question before..but..what kinda boat did you use? Glad you guys had a fun and safe time. Glad it warmed up for your sake :)   Love the pooch under the no pets sign. The one above it would have given me pause as well  Eats looked delish!

Kelly and I have paddled the Dagger Legend in 49 states for years.  It's built for tripping on class 3-4 whitewater with a 450 lb payload.  It's very heavy and weather vanes in the wind.  I can stand and flyfish from it with 40 lbs of Max on the bow.  We've done some solid 3-4 whitewater tandem and a few 5's solo in it.  I'm still looking for the ultimate triple tripper for us.  Maybe one of those bigass Kevlar 18' boogers.  Biggest advantage to the Legend is stability. I've swam twice in like 20 years out of it.
They're getting 500-600$ in good shape for them now.

Thanks max. I was in the wind Saturday and wished I had that big ole Coleman under me. It will tack the breeze too. The big boys shine in open water and in the wonderful breezes!

It is a native watercraft 14.5 ultimate.  It is a hybrid and worked great for the trip. Loving this yak, it is the tandem one and it coverts into a solo.  It held the weight and tracks well.

Very impressed with those boats.  They look stable and appear to paddle very well.  I couldn't believe the load W. got into her AND trimmed.  I think Scott's looking at the 16 footer.
