Calling all Computer Guru's
« on: April 20, 2013, 11:05:16 AM »
Ok..  long story short..  My computer crashed.  I have a new-to-me old one.

Its a Dell XP Professional.

I will be loading in tons of stuff.. but first need two things.

1.  To get that bleep thing up above saying I need to run an adobe flash player on every page I click on in here ...GONE!  :)   I dont connect up fast enough to down load it. My sent is at 1,449,000 bytes and my recieved is at 4,148,174 bytes.  (sigh)

2.  How do I enlarge the whole page so I can read it?   I did click on the 100% in the lower right corner..but thats not what I'm looking for.  I can hardly read the small fonts on the whole page.  This is the Explorer page.. not just in here in B n B.   I looked at properties..but it just enlarged the font that I'm typing with.  It goes smaller again after I hit 'post'.

I'll be back with more quetions if you guys dont mind helping me get back on track with this stuff.

Sincerely ( and I mean that)

WW.
On particularly rough days when I'm sure I can't possibly endure, I like to remind myself that my track record for getting through bad days so far is 100% and that's pretty good.

You need to find a place with faster internet and download your updates, also, download Kaspersky Malware scanner from the company website and scan for spyware and viruses.

I use Linux so I don't really have to worry too much about the latter problems:)

IIRC when I had a computer with XP, I had some issues with something called Service Pack 2.

If it's a laptop, take it to a public library or internet cafe, and try that.

If it's not, then try another family member's or friend's home in a less remote location. This will likely enable you to update your PC.

Try that first and you'll be set. Heck, if you get faster internet, you'll even be able to watch flash videos! :D

You have about a half dozen things going on at once, and need to be more specific.
Are you familiar enough with Windows to know where the "full screen/window" buttons are in the upper right hand corner of the window you have open?  There is a "-" sign, a middle one that looks like a square, and then the "X" to close the window.  Make sure you have your open window on Maximize.

If that's not the issue, what is your screen resolution set on? With your cursor (mouse pointer) on the desktop, and no windows open, right-click the mouse. A window will pop up and click on "properties". When that window opens click on the "settings" tab. Down on the left there will be a slider under the heading "screen resolution". Put your mouse pointer on the slider, left click and move it to the left to get a bigger display on your desktop, and any windows you open after than.  Be sure to say "okay" to save the settings.

Trekster, yup.. thats what was done.  This new computer came from someone who had wireless internet and he had most everything downloaded for me.   All extept that adobe thing.  So after posting here I took it down to my nephew and he put in the adobe.  ( I'm still getting a pop up in B n B to get a flash player..is this the same thing?)

OP..yes!  Thats where I had help before to change the page sizes.  Thank you.  I over did it a bit... now I have to scroll to read everything in here.  But at least I can read it... :)    Thank you!

It was a little bit funny today...  everyone with all that fancy technology.. huge monitor screens and I could read them just fine..  nice and big.   They look at me like  'whats wrong with your eyes if you cant read this?"   well ya..  I get home here and on my ooooold 40 tons monitor I'm with my nose to the glass trying to read everything... sheesh.    One monitor today was about a yard wide... screen things everywhere on it.   uffda...  gave me a headache trying to keep up with it all.

:)  Thanks guys..  so far so good.   I found B n B back and will make that my homepage.

I wish my fix was as easy as yours!
I got a 'new' computer, too. Except that my network wireless card from my old one doesn't play well with it. It works, but I have to be about 10 feet from my router to get a signal. Put it back in the old computer, and it whistles a happy tune. Stupid computers!

WoodsWoman needs some HELP!

She just emailed me earlier today & I just returned home a short time ago & saw it.

She is having a lot of difficulty getting on to B&B . The main trouble seems to be "pop-ups" the way I am reading her email. I will post her email to me, with any non necessary info removed. I also replied to her & asked for her to tell us her browser type. She is currently running Windows 8.

Here is the copy of the emails, if it helps. Fiirst one rec'd at 12:39 CST, second at 1300 CST...Awaiting the browser type as of yet...

Hi Mn. Sport.    could  you please help me?   Could you do some posting for me in  B n B?   Something is changed today to the point I cant post/reply or send PM's in there.  I get a PINK  TIme out message.  It keeps saying to re submit..but it wont let me.    I'm getting pop-ups yellow bar across the top on every page.  And a scrolling advertisement across the bottom that I have to X out in order to read posts.     When I come to the site this morning I usually go to home page and click on "new posts". ..that was completely empty and yet on home page I could see there were new posts.    Same for clicking on ' new replies to your posts'..  nothing in the list.   Empty.

I cannot wipe this Internet Explorer 8  out because its on loan.   I need to find this problem with help from others, I dont know where to adjust things in this computer.

Please??

I typed out an email to you yesterday morning and it wouldnt send out because of a glitch with gmail (incorporated with my ISP emails). So today I was talking with a techie guy from ISP and when I went to see if my emails were working your email zipped on outta here.  :)

I'm still having serious problems with B n B board. I cannot do any of the things I mentioned in the last email.

I'm soo frustrated. And after having two wisdoms pulled yesterday I'm on the weepy side.  All I want to do is browse B n B and get my mind off my face that feels like a horse kicked it in.   **whine**

I dont know if you know how to fix whats going on ?   Or if you'd like to post in HELP that I'm having these problems ?   IF someone is willing to help I give you my permission to pass on my email addy of > Available by PM
to me, I will not share "publically" for her protection< so I can communicate with them on a fix.   I do believe Gryphon was one that helped me out awhile back.  Maybe a PM to him , passing on my email would help?

I can read what is posted if someone types in possible fixes under the HELP post...  and I'll try them.  I just cant reply until that Pink warning sign goes away.

I'm on Windows 8, and have Microsoft Essecials for protection.    I have pop-ups blocked..and yet I'm still getting them.   But I think when I hit reply or PM's this computer is thinking they are pop ups?    This is my gut instinct anyway.  I just dont know where to go to seperate this problem if thats what it is.  PW has checked and it seems the pop-ups are not coming from B n B.    I got to talk to him before things got worse and I was shut out completely.  So I dont think this is coming from B n B.  More so this computer that I dont know my way around in.

Thanks MnSport...  :)  I"m soooo glad I asked for your email awhile back.  Otherwise I'd have NO contact with any B n B folks.   I lost my email addy so if it wasnt for you sending your funny after getting this computer I'da been really stuck. :)

So there ya have it.

I just sent her an email a few minutes ago.

I am sure that there is someone here, who can help her out.

Thnx,

follow that to step 3, uncheck cookies, and click delete. I believe that should solve the problem.

Ok.. following Xunes instructions I did what it said.  Now I'm back here, testing to see if I can post.    I had to re-login and it said I had two people spying on me.. another pop up down below advertising a casino...   and now theres a downloading data for dealply.com on the bottom being busy enough to make my typing verry slow in this reply box.

Lets hope this posts.

PW integrated some adware into the Forum to help defray costs. Maybe that's what you're seeing? Top and bottom of every page.

No sweat WW! Glad to help as best I can...
 :)

I am wondering if your comp is trying to upload a bunch of "updates", maybe.

Knowing the type of browser you are using, might help with the "pop up" situation. Knowing what kind can help with Blocking them.
 :)

Keep trying!

That helps. I will go see what I can find to block popups first.

Here is the first thing I found( emailing also):

How do I turn Pop-up Blocker on or off?

Pop-up Blocker is turned on in Internet Explorer by default. To turn it off or to turn it on again if you've already turned it off, follow these steps:

Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer.

  • Click the Tools button, and then click Pop-up Blocker.
  • Do one of the following:
      • To turn off Pop-up Blocker, click Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
      • To turn on Pop-up Blocker, click Turn On Pop-up Blocker.
    [/li]
...    I have pop-ups blocked..and yet I'm still getting them.

In her email to you she said she already had popups blocked in IE8.
One of the reasons I stopped using IE was the P-Poor blocking ability.

B&B does not, and never has run any pop up advertisements. We run two small banner ads which are necessary to help with operating costs.

You will get a popup notification if you are subscribed to instant notifications for your PMs. Those are not ads. Allowing popups on this site will not cause you to see ads but it might be necessary if you want to get notifications.

Also I highly recommend using firefox or chrome for a browser. Many of the problems with internet explorer can be completely eliminated by using a different browser altogether.

Hi..I think I'm back.  I've never been so happy to see B n B Green!!  :)     I still have a few things to learn.   And firefox was put in here along with the Windows Explorer.

Now the test is to see if I get kicked out as soon as I post and if I have to re-log in. :)

You need to press two keys at the same time. the Ctl key and the "plus" sign. so...hit Ctl + "+" and your pages ill enlarge. To
