How To Make Paper Micarta
« on: May 11, 2013, 12:32:47 PM »
In this video I show one way to make paper micarta.  Since I filmed this I have changed a couple of things.

1.  I use parchment paper instead of wax paper (it does not stick).
2.  I made a press of sorts - kind of looks like a miter box (2" wide) with steel plates.  The prevents a lot of the "squirting" and gives a more even slab.

Where do you find parchment paper? I found some burlap today and was going to make some more with it.
What a great day to be outside.

My apologies for missing your question.  Parchment paper can be found in the grocery store right next to the aluminum foil, wax paper, etc.

Thanks for the video crash.  Very helpful.  I will be making some of this soon.  Does the construction paper hold up as well as cloth micarta?

It does.  The strength is really all about the resin.  Make sure it penetrates an press it tight.

I could be wrong, but as I remember it.....paper micarta was the very first micarta available.  It was an electrical insulating material brought out by Westinghouse that knife makers discovered could be polished to a high sheen.  The paper layers were an added benefit in that they mimicked the grain of natural ivory and even 'yellowed' with age & use.  Westinghouse had the patent on it & eventually quit making it when better insulators were discovered. >:(.   It was a great faux ivory that was more durable and way cheaper than real ivory and could be scrimshawed with 'cracks' to appear to be the real thing.  I only have one set of scales and one block of it left, but I'm saving both for something special!  Like an idiot, I sold all the knives that I ever built with it.....never dreamed they'd stop making it! :P.    Bob Loveless used to use it & that's where I first learned of it.......long, long ago!  :-\
