We used to use an outfit like that in our Boy Scout troop.  Each patrol would make the necessary cordage that they needed for their camp outfits and Pioneering Merit Badge projects.  :camp:

I think I will try the rope club.  I have some wood that would be perfect and there is a 1/2" dowel laying on my workbench. 

I also have a hand drill like the one in your instructions.  That may be viable as well but first I will try the club.

You can also substitute the club for the hand drill.   Use "S" hooks and attach them to the notch of the club as if it were the hook of the hand drill
