Woods time and trying out some new gear
« on: January 23, 2017, 09:47:17 AM »
Well it's been awhile since I got out for a leisurely trip.  So I rounded up my woods buddy and hit the woods to enjoy the day and try out some new gear.  Had to start this trip with a first!  Bel got to try out the old Glennfield model 25 22lr.  It's a bit long but we had some quick fun before heading into the woods.  It was her first time shooting a real boomstick!

we headed off to one of our favorite spots in the little pine forest area

One of the new pieces of gear is this Council Tool Saddle Axe.  I posted an in depth review here http://bladesandbushlore.com/index.php?topic=13554.0;topicseen

we harvested some pitchwood from some low hanging dead pine branches.  We made a pretty good quick haul

Next cool piece of gear I haven't posted on is a sheath for my Redlore knife.  I had Sarge make this for me awhile back and it has been great.  Can be vertical or horizontal carry.

We felled a tree to do some wood processing for fun

Bel had a little Plumb hatchet a long.  It's not sharp enough to cut really but lets her bang around on some wood and do a little damage.

cool gear shot as we decided to rest and get a hot drink and some lunch.  The shotgun is my Remington 870 20 gauge.  It was my first gun I got for my 12th birthday from my grandparents.  I've spent many hours carrying this in hand.  I like having it a long.  Good memories for sure!

next new gear was the MSR Pocket Rocket stove.  I got this on clearance for $20 at a local Academy store here.  I heard enough goods things on it I couldn't pass on the deal.

Here's a Nessmuk trio pic.  Knives are my Redlore and USA made Remington knife.  I think this was called the Waterfowl model.  I like it cause it has a choke tube tool for a 12 and 20 gauge.  I always have it on me when hunting with my shotgun for birds and small game.

I did carve a quick mallet just to see how the axe would do.  I found it very comfortable for carving.

We headed out to walk some fields for quail or to jump a rabbit.

no quail but we did jump some rabbits.  I was too slow on the first and the second was just too thick.  So we ended up skunked on the hunting.  We did have an armadillo walk right up on us though.  That was pretty cool and bel got a kick out of it.  We also jumped some deer pretty close.  The walk back was peaceful as the sun was setting.  It was a good day with my daughter.  I need more like it!

thanks for looking

Looks like lot of fun with your daughter.  The first pic of her and the rifle made me smile.
Enjoy your time together.
What a great day to be outside.

Thanks lgm.  I find myself smiling too at that pic.  Mom and grandma's did not smile at that one.  LOL!  But when it's dad time in the woods it's dads rules :)

Looks like ya had a grand time!

Nice gear setup overall & I really like that saddle axe! Gonna have to go check out your review next!

Thanks for sharing your trip!
:)
I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)

Excellent trip out my friend! As long as you're putting smiles on that beautiful youngin's face, don't be too concerned about ma & g-ma. Days like that are memories you two will share for ever. Make as many as you can cause time goes by so fast, next thing you know you're walking her down an aisle to give her away. Keep up the good work.

Looks like you and Bel had a great day together!!   I wouldn't worry too much about Mom and Grandma, by the look and smile on her face I'd say Bel is gonna handle that one all by herself!!  LOL

I've gotta go check out your review on that axe, I guess I missed it earlier.  It looks like a dandy though and would be really handy to have with you
