Finally caught my shark!
« on: June 10, 2017, 09:03:18 PM »
Caught this shark from the surf in Florida in the Seacrest/Rosemary beach area of the panhandle.  We're on our annual trip and I have been wanting to get one of these and finally made it happen!  Caught it with a lady fish head.  It was fun as heck to catch.  Looking to do it again!

Strong fighters.  I caught a spinner once.  It gave everybody on the beach a show.  The real big ones aren't as much fun to me.  It's like landing a submarine.

Other than cold water dog and sand sharks, I'm ignorant. What species is this?

Thanks guys.  The consensus from the locals here is that it's a blacktip shark.  I released it.  I have no idea what parts of a shark you would eat.  Heard of sharkfin soup.  But if you have to make it a soup to be good than it's not good fish.  I've got a freezer full of kink mackeral and red snapper that is keeping my busy and satisfied in the dinner fare department  :)

Congrats!

Did you use steel leader on your line? It's almost impossible not to break a line on a shark without a steel leader. Black tip sharks are good to eat. Just fillet like you would any fish. Don't worry about bones as there aren't any and the cartilage pretty much dissolves when you cook it. We used to put shark fillets in a tightly sealed foil pouch with some lemon slices, Italian salad dressing, and some "blackened" seasoning and put them right on the grill for a few minutes each side depending on how big and thick the fillets are. When they are done the meat is tender and delicious!

Congrats on the shark. I'm sure it was a blast to catch. Good on you for releasing it if your weren't going to eat it. Some folks down here just catch and kill.

Thanks guys!  Yeah PW I was using a 45lb wire leader, with 50lb braid as my main line.  Horsed em in no problems! :D  hooking up with one needs to be the hard part!  I've lost many fish here being under geared.  No more!

I've never eaten shark fillets, though I certainly would now.
Back in the day, in the Seattle area, restaurants got in a bit of trouble because they were cutting round plugs from dogfish (Dog Shark) and serving them as "scallops". I'm guessing a lot of customers couldn't tell the difference.
The only horror story I've ever heard about eating shark is that you don't want to make your Hammerhead soup in an aluminum pot!  Apparently the hammerhead is the only species, but it can produce toxins if cooked in aluminum.

Nice eating size you had there OE.  Looks like a blacktip. Like PW said great on the grill, lemon and butter straight on the grill and I like the Blacken seasoning just before done.
Blacktip is the only shark I like.
