DIY - Backyard Hammock Stand
« on: July 16, 2012, 11:15:25 AM »
Not sure if any of ya'll like to hang from the trees, but my backyard being completely tree-less left me no other choices to do practice hangs or hammock tests so I had to build this puppy.

Wow, that's a hardcore lookin' rig! You can make a slide off of one side and have a backyard playset! (j/k)

That's really nice looking!  I saw plans for a similar type, how do you rate it for testing?  Are they pretty representative of what you get in the woods?

Other than the fact that my "trees" are 3.5x4.5 inch rectangles instead of odd oval or round shaped tree trunks, it's almost exactly like hanging from a real tree. The only difference is I run out of room at the top and can only get a 14.5 foot spread whereas with trees, you just have to find 2 that are the spaced the way you want. If I wanted to run my tarp in a hex, I would need about 20 feet between the trees.

Nice work! Did you find the design on HammockForums, or did you just wing it? I've been thinking about making one as well. All the steel ones you can buy seem to be too small and WAY too expensive.

Nice simple design Clovis, how's the stability side to side ( not thinking so much when laying down ) but wondering when sitting sideways and rocking? thanks

And just think.. it can be used as a multi-tasker too.   :)     Keep a line across the top and you've got somewhere to hang your car mats to spray them down, or household rugs to smack them clean.

Or a place to hang your hunting outfit to air out before hunting season.

OR.. if your cleaning your bird kill, tie a few knots in the line and use wire on the birds feet ..the knots will keep your bird in place while your cleaning it.

OR.. make a more solid bar across the top and two down the sides and you could work with scraping deer skins on it?   :)

On particularly rough days when I'm sure I can't possibly endure, I like to remind myself that my track record for getting through bad days so far is 100% and that's pretty good.

I keep looking at this.  Its official.  I need to get a hammock so I can build one of these.  I have trees, but none close enough together.

.... humm, I could maybe put a zip line up, then with some prusik knots make some danglers to tie to...  Nah.  I need to make a stand.

Thanks for sharing this!

I was thinking if I added a come-along on one end I could use it for racking trespassers during deer season >:D

Swwweeeet!
thanks for sharing this. I live in the woods but no trees in my yard close enough to hang. I've been wondering how to do it other than sinking 2 4x8s in concrete. lol
Wonderful idea!

It was $45.00 or so to build.

My Mom gave me a great birthday gift.  She gave me an ENO Doublenest Hammock, the ENO Guardian Bug Net, and Atlas Straps.  ENO = Eagle Nest Outfitters.

I will post some hanging picture in the next day or so.
