That's a cool pic of your kid SH, that paddle gives it a vintage touch too

Thanks OE! That was my paddle back when I was that tall. I just picked up an old Old Town paddle in need of some work so we're gonna shorten it up a bit and it will be his new one.

Living in a semi-arid, desert like environment in West Texas, I always envy those with much quicker/better access to water than we have here.

Great pics in this thread. Thanks to those who have shared!

I want to add a little to this thread from my first day out with the Mohawk. I'll start by saying it nice to be comfortable and get back to the bank and realize the water was frozen on your pfd. It was chilly but beautiful.

I like the way things change but remain the same.

The Sycamores look like they are ready for warm weather. The sky was beautifully blue.

I had to have my phone with me today so I took it in this cheapo waterproof box for wally world. It seems to be a sound piece of kit.

The water is fine!

Yeah, I was surprised, too!  Mohawk's come a long way since back in the mid-70's....I think back then they only offered 1 basic hull design in two lengths and you could have any color you wanted , as long as it was red. :P.   Their prices are much different, of course, but compared to similar boats from some of the other big makers they seemed very reasonable to me!

I think I read that shipping was even included in the price....a very significant consideration, these days!

Got out yesterday and the weather was beautiful. Here is just above where I put in.

I got 2 double blade paddles and didn't like either of them. Took my trusty single and that's what I used most of the day. Got a cooler that fits under the webbing too!

Lots of raccoon tracks along the bank. Didn't see any deer sign and didn't see my heron either.

Coon super highway

This is the view going down to the rocks.

Going up

This branch was chewed on a bunch. Sucky picture.

Super knarlly tree.

This is going up to the rocks,

A great day. Thanks for looking.

Mostly trout and some small mouth. I hunt them..never attempt to catch them :) I've found several nice dead falls teaming with fish.

I've noticed that our Belted Kingfishers kind of 'frog hop' a certain distance downriver each time they take off and then stop.   I keep my eye on that spot when approaching and have the camera or binoculars focused on that spot.....most of the time I'm able to spot them before they take off again.   They will usually do these measured hops downstream about 5-6 times before figuring that you are far enough away from their 'home turf' where it figures you are no longer a threat.  Then the last time you will see that particular bird that day, it will head back upstream to its home digs.

The weather was beautiful Saturday and I got a different double blade paddle so nothing do but I hit the river. I didn't take many pics but it was the best day for which you could ask.

I still haven't ran into my friend the heron but I know he's not far.

I was lucky enough to actually spot a beaver in the water. He disappeared quickly but I found this sign he couldn't hide.

Throw in a couple of the flow. Was a great day to be out.

We saw a nekkid guy too...not sure what the heck he was doing but I didn't get a pic!! You just never know natures bounty.

Another beautiful - beautiful day on the river.  I love those photos man, thanks for posting them.
You're right, one of these weekends, I'm gonna head over, and we'll paddle it and enjoy it.
Thinking maybe mid May time frame - after that four day camp, and after Spring Gobbler cools down a little - or I tag out  :D
It's so nice to have a schedule filled with hunting/camping/fishing/paddling

Perhaps it was that fellas birthday, and he was out enjoying the day in his suit - laughing...  Never know what you'll see...

Creek,

Bring your canoe with you next time you are up my way, we have this French broad that is worth spending some time looking at.

She's the third oldest river on the planet, but she is still a looker.

Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

Got out this afternoon and it turned into a really nice time. Wind stopped, sun finally came out. The place I was paddling today is a bird sanctuary.  Birds flying around everywhere.

This was my load out. I love this little boat. Had my paddle, a machete, PFD, coat, small cooler, and water proof box. Put it on my shoulder and away we went.

Geese

Lots of smooth water.

A big ole black duck or goose of some sort.

This pair of white ducks were plowing around too.

Really fun day

That river looks custom made for canoeists, Creek!   Were you the only one, besides the birds, out there today?   Is there any motorized boat traffic allowed there or is it strictly a non-powered area?  Looks like you had a great day!  It's snowing here tonight. :(

I've never been much of a fisherman. I love fish. You are correct that there are some fish in the Smith. The state stocks rainbows and brown trout are native. Not sure about bass.  I spot schools of trout (4 to 6 inches) in the summer in the deadfalls. I like the quiet, the birds, the sound of the water and the boat. I don't seem to miss the people :) It snowed then rained buckets last night so I'm going a solo down tomorrow for about 3 hours!

Was able to arrange me some transportation Saturday so was able to go down the river for a few hours. Had a nice flow of water and the weather was beautiful.

A few pics of my trip

Big blow down trying to block my way

Goose making sure I didn't misbehave

Got on this little island to straighten my back out for a few.

Glamor shot of my little boat

Was a great day! Did see my friend the Heron finally. He wouldn't let me get close enough to photo him.
