B&B is now Blades and Bushlore!
« on: July 29, 2014, 09:57:39 AM »
In a desire to preserve certain elements of our community identity, I chose to rename the forum "Blades and Bushlore".

Before doing so, I made sure to check for trademarks on the word "bushlore" using the uspto.gov website and I did not find a trademark for the word "bushlore", nor did I find one for "Blades and Bushlore". As far as I can tell, as of today nobody has been using the term "Blades and Bushlore" in the US for anything. The domain was available so nobody was using that either.

First, let me begin by acknowledging that Condor Knife and Tool has a knife called the bushlore. I have no intention of trademarking the word "bushlore", nor do I have any intention of selling a knife called a bushlore. I have, however, applied for a service mark for "Blades and Bushlore" as it relates to an online discussion forum ONLY. This has zero to do with the retail sale of a knife named the bushlore for which a search did not reveal a trademark. I just want to clear that up right away so that people know that the only thing we are applying for is a service mark for the forum name in it's entirety.

What this does, is allow us to continue to use our existing logo that you are all familiar with. It only requires a simple change in the text of the logo. We can still refer to the forum as "B&B", or if you are so inclined, "Bed and Breakfast".

We all know why "blades" is a part of our forum name. but let's take a look at "bushlore".

Here's a link to the Merrian-Webster dictionary definition of "bush".

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bush

As a noun, entry 2 is relevant:

Quote
2 : a large uncleared or sparsely settled area (as in Australia) usually scrub-covered or forested :  wilderness ?usually used with the

...and a link to their definition of lore:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lore?show=0&t=1406588612

Quote
1 :archaic :  something that is taught :  lesson

2 :  something that is learned:

a :  knowledge gained through study or experience
b :  traditional knowledge or belief

3 :  a particular body of knowledge or tradition

So there you have it. A forum for discussing blades and sharing knowledge about wilderness.

Carry on!

Well, I like it. I think it might actually be better for me than "bushcraft" ever was. I really do believe it describes who we are a little better and that's really important to me when it comes to a name. There's a fair bit of 'yarn' spinning here, there's skills taught, and there's a lot of memories and reminiscing, so I think "lore" is a real good fit.

As far as the knife goes, well, you've explained that, but I really don't see any chance of confusion there.

Great job PW. You are to be commended for a great response in all this. You kept yourself well (in public, anyways) and it really looks like you acted as opposed to reacted, and I really respect that.

Kudos my friend. Very well done.

Three cheers for PW!

To establish an independent identity, this was a great change. Good on everyone for making this happen.

IMO there is WAY too much emphasis on the whole "bushcraft" verbiage hangup. Who cares, seriously......  Bushlore, woodslore, traditional woodsman skills, stick abuse, whatever......

Good choice on name change, though.

I think "lore" works perfectly...perhaps more accurate than "craft".

I had already changed our VA/NC group's name to "The Bullies of Bushlore" prior to the announcement.

But I haven't filed a trademark on it... yet.  >:D
Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

Hope the service mark search goes well.

I suppose it takes awhile for the new name to show up on a search.  Blades and Bushlore search only shows the Condor Bushcraft knife.

I can get on site by typing the old name though.  Interesting.

Still doesn't work PW.  I tried Goggle and Yahoo using Chrome.  First 12 pages are all reviews or sales of Condor knife.  I get here with the old name just fine.

Yes, but that redirect will not be there forever.

The correct link to use is: bladesandbushlore.com/index.php

The old domain is forwarded to allow members to find their way here, but it won't keep working forever.

Outstanding choice& change, PW!

I admire the nice way you dealt with the "poke in the eye", & chose to resolve the situation in a better manner than was presented to everyone.

Shows a lot of class, And along with that... I heartily want to give you an electronic  "pat on the back", for ingenuity in the well chosen "name change". The "service mark" isn't too bad of an idea either, & is what I call a C.Y.A. move.
 ;)

Once again! Outstanding & also "well played"

*sigh* .....
I am "In The Bush" right now (please tell me I don't gave to say "In The Lore" .. lol), and as I check my email every few days, I saw one from B&B
... So I have not closely followed the silliness leading up to this change ('tho I did see a Facebook post, on the page of  "The Group That Shall NOT Be Named", indicating some sort of "ours is bigger than yours" crap, and layin claim to the term "bushcraft" .. aarrggggg....
'Twill be interesting to see some "real" fallout from this silliness.. heh !!

You would think, that The GrownUps amongst us would be better than this .. Huh??

Guys, I've been absent for a while now but rest assured I'm still here. While I think all this bushcraft trademark nonsense is complete bs, I do like the name change. It gives us separation from a group that is clearly in it for the money and doesn't want to play nice.

I will be updating the logo to reflect the name change and just like before, you guys are free to use it in anyway the owners see fit. I needed some new shirts anyway.
