Treestands, Doves, 16 Bore Model 12, and a Drahthaar
« on: September 04, 2016, 10:32:50 AM »
It's storming now, so I have a chance to sit down and make a post.  Since it's Labor Day weekend I have some time off so I needed to get outside.  I'm late getting my treestand hung, but got it done yesterday.  I have been reluctant to hunt out of trees the older (and fatter) I get, but his is a pretty stout set up.  The landowner adjacent to the shelter belt I has planned to hunt started pulling up all of the scrub and trees the deer used as their bedroom.  He said he'd have it all in crop next year. That was the area I had my trailcam and posted the pictures of the 9 point in the other thread.  I'll still hunt there but thought I'd get a couple other places ready.  I have blanket permission to hunt the area I put my stand, although I have not put any trailcams out to scout it this year.  It's heavily used by deer, so we'll see.  I think it's worthwhile to spend some time here.

Dove season started on Sept 1, so Sam and I got out to hunt several times this weekend.  I bought a 16 gauge Model 12 last winter, and I decided it'd be the shotgun to use this year.  It was manufactured in the early 50's, I have to check the serial number again, but I believe 1954.  It's taking me awhile to get used to it, but I'm getting better.  It has a fixed modified choke. I have been missing some easy shots because I didn't practice enough, but I'm getting better.  Sam is having a blast and that's what counts.  I bought a Mojo spinning wing decoy last year, and it works as advertised.  I have been setting it plus about eight or ten regular decoys in a cut wheat field with good results.  In the picture showing Sam with the dove in his mouth, the bird was actually alive!  The feathers come out easy and stick to a dog's saliva.  A squirt bottle and lots of water helps.

Anyway, it's calling for rain today and tomorrow, so I'll be cleaning things up inside.  I guess I'll start with dog ears.  I hope you all have a great Labor Day!  Wes

Looks like a good plan, and a fun day, or two or...more.

I did a little searching but was unable to find the answer. Was the 16 gauge Model 12 built on the same frame as the 12 gauge or did they make one just for the 16?  I think the Model 12 is pretty awesome;  12, 20 gauge and the nifty model 42(?) I think was the 410 bore, but ain't never seen the 16.
...don't go thinking you know me.

Sweet 16 should be perfect for doves......
MF shotgun was a Model 12 ....and my uncles was the Ithaca M 37, both were 16ga....
I had both for a while when  they passed .....but did pass them down to my nephews.

Always liked that shot gun......

My best friend growing up had a Browning Sweet 16.  He was pretty darn good on doves with that thing.  I'm certain he still has it.

You got some good stuff going on there, Wes.

The Model 12 16 ga. was built on a smaller frame that the 12 ga.  The one I used to have was made in 1954 and is one of the best upland pump shotguns ever made (in my opinion of course)

Thanks Stan. I was fairly sure Winchester wouldn't do it any other way. That would be real nice. Congrats Wes.

I wouldn't mind trying out a model 37 like Hunter mentioned either. I have featherlights in 12, and 20. They work really good. But I love the model 12 a little bit more and that makes me jealous

I had a Model 37 20 bore.  Deluxe model and it came with 3 barrels.  A short cylinder bore with sights, a 28" solid rib full choke, and a 26" vent rib Improved Cylinder.  A very nice gun but prone to jam for some reason.  Another of those "shoulda kept it" things. It had as good a piece of wood on it as anything I have ever seen.

Good time Wes!  I hope to get out soon myself for some dove action.  Put a pic up of Model 12 next time you're out with it
