why ai'nt wood sexy too?
« on: March 27, 2018, 07:28:10 AM »
Many moons ago Red posted the knife porn thread. you remember that.
for all to oogleand ahhhhh over. given that half the beauty in a knife
is in the scales. so me thinks that we should give some time for what
makes a knife to oogle and ahh over, hmm. lately i've been bitten by the
spalted bug. you know birch, maple, pecan oh my,and all the rest.
last night i even found a web site that explains how to spalt your own wood.
is that cool or what. so how bout we get this started, what do you have wild harvested
from your neck of the woods, or even stuff you bought it's all good.

stabilized or naked, any harvesting stories?
come on show us the burls, so let's give this ago
i'll try to jump this later today with some wood i have.

It probably should be in the Knives section..........

Here is one of Red's great pieces of wood on a Wood Bear knife he handled and then sold.  I don't think it is spalted wood but it is a nice looking handle.  This is one of Red's photos of it.  I have had it for quite awhile but it gets no use.

That sounds like my morning wood, No pics exist...

What is spalted? I need some comparison photos maybe. A link to that site would be cool too...

Spalted wood is basically dead, rotten wood.  Various coloration in it is caused by fungi.  While some of it has some beautiful coloration/patterns, it would not be my first choice for knife scales even with the best stabilizing.

Wood is one of the coolest things I can think of. Knife scales are relatively small, so it takes a lot of crazy grain to get people excited I guess. what I like to see is grain that accentuates and follows the shape and geometry of the handle.

I believe Red was using alot of blue/green, blue or green box elder burl. Here is a link with a sample.  https://www.knifeandgun.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SWDBG
