Shawl Pin
« on: August 22, 2016, 05:05:55 PM »
My wife knits a lot , she's got more yarn than I have in knives axes and chainsaws LOL
She was nagging me for a shawl pin , after she showed me a couple and the price I went out to woodpile and came up with this .

If you can I would like to see it on the shawl.  It really looks nice.

Very cool carving, dancan!      I assume your wife will use it with loosely knit shawl material.....I have seen almost identically made wrought iron blanket pins that were hammered out at the forge.  Of course, the 'needle' was much more slender to keep poking huge holes in the blanket.

Thanks for the kind words !
Since it was a dead standing birch a week ago I'm letting it set for for a few more days to make sure it doesn't crack but I think it'll be fine , I'll finish by sanding and then some tung oil .
The pin was just one I made after supper to see how it would work , I'll make another that will look more like an arrow .

Nice work Dancan. I like the collaboration aspect- your wife knits the shawl and you carve the pin- that's nice.

Recently I learned about a soap finish. Not hard to do and easy to search out.

Nice carving and I hope your wife enjoys using it.

Well done! Nice knife BTW, I especially appreciate the "eye" stamped on the blade gives it some character!

I can't take credit for the stamp , it's a Polar knife blade from Brissa that I bought years ago .
I did do some grinding on the blade and threw a piece of birch on it .

Nice job! The ones I make are usually out of iron or copper.

These I did on the forge.

Now you need to knit the shawl "o) I did. For my wife's Christmas gift about 6-7 years ago.

Thanks, I?ll save that link. I?ve done a few cut out of sterling silver with a jewelers saw and graved it a bit.
