Yard Sale Axes
« on: September 14, 2016, 04:45:39 PM »
Every summer one hopes to score a few neat ones :)

Got this one for 10$ , a hardly used 5lb Norlund splitting axe , 36" handle .

I split a bit of wood with it but it's not my kind of axe for splitting , I gave it to a friend that is about 6'2" , he loves it , cleand up the head and handle and has propably split 2 cord with it so far .

I found this Ochsenkoph 6lb Spalt-Fix for 10$

I made the metal guard around the handle , it's formed tight and welded in the back with a pin going through it , 32" handle on it and it's gonna be a user .

I found another not so pretty 5lb Norlund .

For 3$ I'll put a 32" on it .

You guys find any this summer ?

I found a double bit earlier this summer. Posted about it somewhere in here. It was in that $10 range too. It is leaning against the wall in the garage at the moment. Haven't found the time to do much to it, although it is pretty good shape.
:)

 Congrats on your finds!

Nice.  I've never came across a Norlund randomly.  All three look like prime great users.  Good on you for lookin!

We need some more axe projects going on here

 Great finds :). No luck here...the only axes I've come across are too far gone to be worth restoring into users.

other places to look are
farm auctions, antique stores, garage sales, and flea markets can be a gold mine for
axes, kick myself when i think about it. when i used to collect stanley planes i used
to go to our lady of the flea market religouesly every sunday.
buuutttt because i was collecting planes and not axes i paid little atttetion.
i remember seeing dozens upon dozens every sunday for 2-12 dollars.

dancan,
I can sometimes barely believe we live in the same area, what with all the excellent finds you make.
(I know actually that it's due to the amount of effort you put in to the finding compared to me - :) )
Hope you're well,
Merry Christmas,

Found two Wetterlings and a Nordland hatchet at yard sales last Summer. Both the SAW were timber cruisers.

In Western Maine you find a lot of Swede axes and hatchets.  Got a few Hults Bruks the Summer before.  All smaller sized axes.

Yeoman , it's hit and miss , you can go out and see all kinds , it just depends on the moon I guess .
Sometimes all you see are rusty , beat but they look like an antique so they want crazy money , sometimes they're plentiful and in nice shape but all chinese imports and then there are days that you go home smiling  :)
I never find them GB double bit or embossed though :(

Your work looks worth the effort!  Is it a Kelly or a Council?  I'm only guessing one of those from the red paint it had.  Looks real good though.  nice save

That is a nice one.  I like the shape of the head and you did a great job hafting it.   :)

Hmm...  I'm gonna guess then it was a paper label Kelly.  Maybe in their Red Warrior line of axes.  Doesn't matter really though.  Cool axe no matter...

That's a solid $20 spent there.  I like looking at your finds but then I get annoyed as I don't come across much in person around here...  What handle size are you going to do on the Wetterlings?

30" or 32" on that one , that last Hultafors handle I got was the longest my supplier had in stock at 30" .
I've got to check with LeeValley because they stock replacements for some of the Gransfors and Hults that they sell .
I do go though dry spells of not finding any good resto candidates but they do pop up , lots of friends know I'm always looking , I just tell them , no fiberglass handles , no beat to death and no more than 10$ ;)
