Axe question
« on: May 15, 2017, 10:28:45 AM »

I have a vintage Plumb hatchet head that's in really fine shape,  it looks like about 1-1/4 pound head but feels a little heavier, I mounted it on an 18" octagon handle,  concentrating on the overall refinishing and hafting I didn't notice that the head had five small star like punch marks under the "Plumb Made in USA" marking and also appears in the same place on the other side.
I have several vintage Plumb hatchets and axes and never noticed marks like that on the others,  I suppose they could have been put there by the original owner,  but they are perfectly in line and spaced evenly suggesting that they may have been put there by the maker.

Has anyone ever noticed these or have any idea what they mean ?

I haven't seen that before Moe, or heard of it for that matter on a Plumb.  I've seen military marks on swedish ones though.  Maybe it's something similar to that with a military group or private company putting on an identifying mark on it.  That's all I got.
