Finally found my Axe
« on: June 05, 2017, 03:36:30 PM »
Hey, sorry long time no speak. Was a crazy winter. Not sure summer is going to be much better. :( But anyways, I've been looking (Kinda casually) for a good axe. Well the wife and I went to an estate sale saturday, and well jackpot. Found my unit it needs a little TLC, but looks to be a good one. I do not see any head stamps yet. But I have not cleaned up the head. Seems old and in pretty good shape. It needs a new handle as I dont trust the current one. I suspect it is the victim of an over strike, and sitting around unused.

The poll has seen some use

I believe the handle suffered an over strike and thats what led to this. The rest of the handle is sturdy.

Will post pics and such once I get a chance to clean up the head, and rehandle the axe.

It's always fun seeing others' finds.  And more, the clean up.

LOL, I had to run down to my shop and check to see if one of my "waiting to be rescued axes" was missing,  I have an old Woods Verona 3-1/2 pounder with a handle that's been badly damaged from an over strike that's identical to yours.
The head on mine is rusted in the same way and unmarked also, but the original handle is stamped "Woods Verona made in USA" midway down the handle.
Like mine, yours is probably not a valuable collectors piece,  but I'll bet that with a little TLC and a new handle it'll perform with the best of them.

I will be definitely posting pics once I get it back ship shape. I looked closer at the handle, because of what you said about your Woods Verona Moe. It says Turnerday. Which feel free to correct me, those of you in the know. But I believe only made handles. So maybe its beeb rehandled before? Perhaps its original with Turnerday handle and x head? Dont know.

By the looks of that handle I bet it's the tenth one in as many years.  Someone needed better glasses or a 4 inch shorter handle.  Anyways...the head looks promising Sam.  Get that baby in order and start swinging...
