I need to get off my butt and go take some tomahawk pictures. Maybe one day this week if I can get away long enough to go someplace picture worthy.

So what do they call the style of the smaller one in this picture? My grandparents had one in with the garden tools and I remember chopping on tree roots with it as a kid.  I thought it was super neat that it had a hammer poll on it. I guess the notch is for pulling nails?

Some folks call them carpenters hatchets, shingling hatchets, I call them hammer hatchets. I also call them harder to get your hands on. I smile sometimes when folks are surprised I cut them up. My feeling is if it needs a little mod to make it better for today, so be it. I try not to get too sentimental.

I wish I'd remembered to snag that one from my grandparent's house when I moved. (I do get sentimental, lol!) But it was ground down way short. It must have been sharpened on a bench grinder so it lost a lot of material from the edge quickly.

I like those little hawks you made by modding them though. They look like they would swing a little faster and be more handy.

Few of mine

This is an old Kentish pattern hatchet i rehelved, the helve was hand carved from Ash (Fraxinus excelsior), i have no idea how old the actual head is, but i know it sat in may parents shed for 40 years

Gransfors Wildlife

Plumb USA Hatchet i picked up at a local show for pennies

Gransfors

Gransfors Mini Hatchet

Gransfors Wildlife Hatchet

Gransfors SFA

My latest

Hans Karlsson Bowl Adze

On top of these i have some beater axes (Amtech), a cheapie axe that is surprisingly good, from our version of Home Depot, and a couple of big old felling axes, one is an Elwell that im going to do up one day, the other, is an American Felling Axe style that i can find no makers name on, again, these are donkey's years old

Of course these types of thread tend to focus on metal axes, so how about somthing different.

Flint hand axe, approx 250,000 years old that was found locally to where i live, this particular one was shown to me when i paid a visit to one of our small local museums to study the flint tools, the Curator went and got this out of storage so i could have a look at it, but the best one is this

dated to 485,000 years old and again found locally, and yes, i got to hold it :)

Cheers Danno, the handle on the Adze is about 7" in length, measured from the bottom of the head

Paleo tools are awe inspiring... especially after one realizes the tremendous amount of skill and knowledge required to make good tools. I struggle to get a passable knapped edge on anything in my electrically lighted garage in the summer.... imagine the conditions 485,000 years ago!

I've handled medieval manuscripts and was impressed with the history in those objects, and I can only imagine the sense of connection with our prehistoric ancestors one would feel  handling those stone tools.

Thanks for sharing!

I live not that far away from some Neolithic Flint Mines and to this day i find Neolithic scrappers and flakes in the garden, last one i found was dated to be 6000 years old, it blows my mind to think that someone 6000 years ago made and used this and here i am all that time later holding the same tool, i dont care what anybody says, you get a connection with the past with things like that, let alone something nearly half a million years old, i wonder how many of our present tools will be around in half a million years time?

Yep knapped stone tools are fascinating. I had the privilege of helping out on an excavation a couple of years ago and found a few beads and a projectile point while screening dirt removed from the excavation. Of course everything was cataloged and photographed and all that jazz.

Plumbs are not too awful rare, ones in as good of shape as yours Kep...may be (nice axe bro). They were produced during a time when "made in the USA" really meant something. Here are a couple I had handy.

Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

Any possibility of a tutorial for getting an edge like that?  I have one that cuts just slightly better than a butter knife.

Thats gorgeous, ive been after one of these for ages, but I refuse to pay in Pounds Sterling what you guys pay in Dollars, these run for approx $50-$60 over here + shipping, absolute rip off.

Wow, that's a hefty markup!  It's probably the customs tariff or something that drives up the price. I shipped a knife to Canada a while back and customs charged my customer $40.00 to get it out! If you do everything "by the book" it's prohibitively expensive.

I truly appreciate the offer, a belt grinder is easy to get ahold of, the skills to use it are what I lack.  PM on the way.

If, by odd chance, I were to mail one across the pond... Customs slip marked "camp axe" - would you have to pay some sort of fee on that, or..?
