Holy moly! I got a box full! I've got enough to wrap the handle on every knife, axe, shovel, rake, mop and broom in the house.

Seriously, thank you, Beast.

Of the original 60 mile pile, how many miles do you estimate are left?

Got my 4 pounds a week ago. Holy crap, that's a lot of cord! Great condition and the box was jammed full.

Hiding it from the wife until she is out of the house and I can play with it...melt the ends, divide it between myself and my buddy.

   Thanks a lot, Beast.

Every time someone says "That's a lot of paracord" it puts a smile on my face.

On the other hand when I am lifting a few totes of it weighing 50+ pounds,  I'm not smiling, it's more like a grimace on my face.

I watched him snap leaves off trees.  And yes they were what he was aiming at.

We've seen someone hurt themselves with these whips.  Don't try this at home kids.

Just to show how much one pound of paracord is on the left is a standard hank of 100' that usually goes for $8-$9 in the Surplus store.  That's for the "commercial grade stuff" that you will typically find.

On the right is a pound of real military spec 550 cord, about 240 feet worth.

So you decide, 240 feet of real paracord for $5.50 or 100 of the knock off stuff for three times the cost per foot.

And it is most cost effective to get at least a couple of pounds since the shipping cost per pound goes down per unit shipped.

Mike, I'm sending you a P.M. for two #s of 550 paracord. I really don't have a need for it, but I'm sure a good use will come sometime in the near future.

No big rush on this order.

Ok, being OCD, I pulled the individual strands apart and made them into individual wrapped coils.  Two pounds gets you 15 coils at 30 feet each.  I did the whole chore in about 20 minutes so don't worry about sorting out a noodle bowl. The individual lengths are easy to separate. :)

Max, Thanks for the update. I just confirmed an order for 2 Lbs with Mike. Looks like I'll need to learn a good splicing knot to make a few longer lengths. I'm thinking of a fly-fishing knot.

Thanks again, Tom

I think a knot will reduce the load bearing strength by up to 50%  so adjust accordingly.

Max, Thanks. You are right, a knot will reduce the strength of the 550. But I'm going to use the longer piece for a tarp tie down so I should be OK.

Woo Hoo  I have a tracking number, should be here soon. Mike has always been very quick to ship. Thank you Mike.

Tom,

My pleasure.  As to longer lengths, a uni to uni knot preserves much of the strength of the line but just about any well tied knot should suffice for your purposes.

And since knots were mentioned we can expect Wolfy to chime in any second now  O:-)

No complaints about shipping speed.  Got mine in 2 days.  I wish eBay could ship that fast. My last order of 300 lumen mini flashlights took 12 days to get from California to Houston.

I had to look up uni knot. Tied on hundreds of those when I fished in Colorado but never thought to use  it paracord.

Beast, what is a uni knot?

uni to uni or double uni is a method I use to join two lines, used to use it all the time tying fishing line to leader but it can be used in other applications as well

here is someones YouTube

A useful knot but trying to tie on a 2 lb leader standing up to your arse in ice cold,  fast moving runoff defied me most of the time.  I wanted to resort to the Water Works Booster method.

Craig,

Chime away.

JB, the uni "system" is just what I am proficient with, and a well tied knot is better than a "superior" but poorly tied knot.

MaxE, I've always been a boat fisherman.  If I'm standing in up to my arse in ice water something has gone very wrong, and it once did, but that's a story for another time...
Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? One should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved.

I've used the Uni-Knot ever since it was 'new' and lauded as being the strongest terrminal knot known to man. ;D     It was introduced first in an old issue of (I think) Outdoor Life Magazine, but in some lines, the old, simple and often overlooked Palomar Knot comes out on top of the heap, so who knows?

JB's Blood Knot is, to my knowledge, one of the very best out there in retaining a VERY high percentage of the line's test weight.

I bought some ice fishing tackle when we lived in Iowa.  We were about a mile from the Mississippi River. The stuff looked like a fly's leg tied to a baby hair. Thank God it was all snelled. I bought it at the end of the season and the river never froze over again until we moved. I still have it along with all my fly fishing gear. Maybe in the next life.
I guess he'd rather be in Colorado.

I like the uni for connecting similar sized lines but for attaching dissimilar sized lines, especially when one of the lines is a superbraid like power pro I use a modified reverse albright, sometimes known in the northeast as an "Alberto knot".

I like Paracord... Particularly, when it is offered at one helluva price & from a great source.
;D

And I don't care what knot ya use to tie things up with it....
LOL
:D

Seems I am prejudiced that way too...

I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)

Woo  Hoo ...My paracord 550 arrived today. I ordered 2 Lbs for $16.75 (with shipping).

That equaled 17 hanks of 30+ ft cord. The cord is O.D. green so it will be great for any hunting activity.

The only thing I'll need to do to the cord is melt the ends to keep them from fraying.

Thanks Mike and my regards, Tom

I would probably use grapevine knots to join the cords if I didn't plan to untie them, or figure 8 bend if I wanted it to be temporary, more from force of habit than any other consideration.
