Picked it up off a table at last weekend's tractor show.

That is just so cool!  I've been looking for one of those for years.  In fact, it has been so long that I have learned how to get along without it!
I guess he'd rather be in Colorado.

That reminds me......I need to go out to the farm and get mine.  I needed it about a month ago and didn't have it at hand......it took much longer to do the job than if I'd just went out and retrieved it. :P

Damn handy tool, this is the third one I've picked up since moveing up to North Central Florida. This coming Friday I'll be heading up to another Tractor Show in GA. These don't show up very often and are getting harder and harder to find.

Looks like Ebay has a few. From there it looks like $10 is a good score.

Hand-vise......usually used for holding small parts to do work like filing.

As long as we're talking about these things, I'll add another one of their intended design functions.....they are intentionally desisigned with flat sides, so that after you have the piece that you are working on clamped in its jaws, you can then position and clamp the flat sides of the hand-vise in the jaws of your bench or post vise.   That way you can use both hands to file, thread, or whatever else you are trying to accomplish with both hands for more control and accuracy in your work.  I actually use mine a lot more that way than I ever do trying to 'freehand' anything with it.

There are modern reproductions of these things available on Amazon.  Be aware that there are two different types available......one like hush's and one with a fancy turned handle meant more for the jewelry trade.  They both work for 'free hand' work, but you can't clamp the one with the wooden handle in your bench vise without damaging the handle.  :P

Thanks for that explanation Wolfy.  I could use one of these from time to time and am glad to hear that new ones are available.   ;)

Something else they're pretty handy at is using like a small metal brake.  You can do one-off jobs like bending duct work or shaping a broken belt guard that goes over a compressor wheel.

But like Wolfy said, you can really save your finger tips and knuckles from getting burned when working with small parts on a grinder.

Cool score Hush!!

I have been after one of those for about 5 years now, and I simply refused to pay $60+ for one. I knew my good buddy up there in Cracker Country would come through for me!

Should have said something earlier. Tack makers use them regularly here in the mid west. I see them at auctions quite a bit.  :)

Might be why I'm finding them up here in north central Florida, certainly horse country.
