inactive members
« on: May 17, 2017, 05:37:48 AM »

I was just going through the B&B members list looking for the last active date of another missed member, Jontok was a fairly active member who just dropped out after completing one of his great challenge give aways  a little over a year ago.
Anyhow, in scrolling through the list of members in the J section there were allot of names I don't remember ever seeing posting, in fact most have never posted more than one or two times if any,  then I scrolled a few more pages and saw the same,  it would be interesting to know just how many of the 3,000 plus members here are posting regularly enough to keep this forum alive.

Probably less than fifty post regularly.  Just a guess of course.  Lots of one to ten posters and then nothing.  Also lots of active participants who suddenly just quit.  Pretty much the norm for most blogs I think.

I think the biggest problem we have with member retention is a relatively low daily activity rate. If all 3000 members joined up on the same day and started posting, we'd have a ton of activity, and would probably retain a lot more active members. It's up to to the members to post, rather than just lurk. ;)

It may also be because those of us that DO post regularly, compose dialogue of such 'gemstone quality' that lurkers are in awe of our brilliance and therefore rendered speechless. :coffee:

I did a quick check in the members list..
As of right now, these are the stats:
- 3106 members in total
- 1949 never posted anything
- 243 members posted 1 post
- 117 members posted 2 posts
- 80 members posted 3 posts
and then it slowly increases roughly every 50 members by 1 post and after 10 posts per member it goes quicker up.

Top 10 posting members:
wolfy - 16936
Old Philosopher - 15399
PetrifiedWood - 11092

Thanks for putting that data together Dabberty.  Interesting result.  I am surprised that nearly 2/3 of the signed up members never made a post.

Yeah it's similar to any new situation for people.  If people don't engage them and get dialogue so they feel they have made a friend or friends they probably won't come back.  It's pretty much on us regulars to get activity going with them to hold their attention a bit till their hooked, pretty much what PW said.

nothing unusual.   Active forum participation is always very low compared to the total number of members.  Now that I am laid up in the house for a month or more,   I have lots of time to post, but since I can't get outdoors and play,  just don't have much to add at this time.   lol

Few thoughts.....

I'm thinking most all forum are this way....
Many new members find this forum by Googling something and are led here.
THey have a specific question on a subject.....Ask, ...and when answered... they move on.

Or
THey show up wanting to have someone do their term paper for them.....

Or ask about the "best whatever"
They "best whatever" is often something they already bought....and are fishing for agreements and atta-boys.
Same with You tube vid's.....
Ask for comments (and sign up subscribers)...but don't like the answers.

One guy joined to PM me about a axe I had posted a pic of....wanting to "take it off my hands"
Told him no....Gone.

Also this forum doesn't have the infamous "Like" button....."If I don't get a bunch of Likes...I'm outta here"...posters.

Also had a flurry of Quote, quote, qoute, quote....stuff that seems to have subsided....got annoying...

So that leaves a core group that bring up interesting subjects....regular s shoot the ship, give atta boys and generally are encouraging......th is need to happen with new members.

I usually do try to give a new poster an "attaboy" and sometimes will ask a question that leads to something they could add comments to.  Sometimes it works but often it doesn't live beyond that post.

I would like to post more often.  I enjoy the interesting discussions and the opportunity to learn.

What holds me back is that I already write articles for my blog.  This consumes nearly all my non-outdoors time.  I would love to link to some of these articles so we can discuss them on the forum.  But a couple of members prefer that I didn't.  So I respect their wishes.

I am content to read others' posts and try to contribute useful comments when I can.

  Cheers,

I check in here about once to 2x a day. I do not post that much lately, since I do not have any comment on the topic(s), or I just don't feel like it.

I still get out to the woods almost everyday. I just have not been feeling like taking pics & videos, since they don't get looked at by many folks it seems.
And many don't even care about the pics sometimes. When there are groups that get together, then there is more participation in the woods & in the forum. Solo trips seem to not go over as well for some reason..
???

With videos...Trying to do it by yourself can be a real pain in the patoot. Then there is the editing if necessary(although I try not to do much, as some have likely noticed. LOL). Then the uploading & then after that.... if no one appears to be interested, it seems like it just becomes a chore ya avoid doing at all.

So, I a guessing there are folks out there lurking & doing their thing. I wish folks would post more too & I used to try to stimulate folks into it. But it seemed that was like kicking a dead horse & my leg got tired.. I just sit back & read mostly now.

Who knows... Maybe folks will get more motivated since Summer is basically here  & although the FLA folks/Krackanueners & those folks in the hot areas have it getting very hot for doin much outside, the rest of us that get the Winters are getting out more & more.

Hopefully it will pick up.
:)

I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)
