River Rats Nest
« on: October 14, 2012, 04:31:32 PM »
Our friend swamphanger suggested a thread for water travel adventures. Here It is. Will be easier to just add on to this as we venture out. I will start with a few pics from this morning. 2 days in a row!

The weather was just perfect again. We were on the water at about 830 eastern.

We did find some interesting blast holes. Some under water and one on the bank. This is near the bridge I've shown before

The blue flower from yesterday.

A very nice weekend!

The nest on the bridge were cooler. The birds were active this morning but I just couldn't see them good enough.

Everyone should take any opportunity to get on the water.

That second pictures is pretty good.  I like the glassy waterway view shots.  Those are cool.  I think it's time you threw in a cast iron skillet and made some shoreline lunch or breakfast :)  Then you'll really love your canoe.  Taking that extra fun but heavy gear is a huge plus with the canoe.  Thanks again for the pics.  Nice idea too on the thread to just add to.

My best friends little man and me on the Silver River FL.  We had him sitting down at first, but he was determined to paddle like the big boys.  lol

Some shots on the Ocklawaha River, FL on a few trips.  This and the Silver are my home waters.  I can be on either in 15 min. from the house.  We camp on the Ocklawaha alot.

Max and me.

TheHumbleBlivit.

Red always is always good to bring plenty of meat.  I think that's LetsRock in the background.

Hushnel and Chili.  Hush's wife Deb relaxing in the background.  That canopy came in handy later on... it poured.

Greyhound locating a Geocache in a tree.

Me SUP'n (Stand Up Paddle) on the Nantahala River in NC.  A delightful class 2-3 river that's a VERY popular rafting trip.  I spent several days a week doing just this all last summer.

Took my crazy buddy Paul on the flat water today. We have been blessed with some beautiful weather. Chased the heron and got a too shaky video.  I will get another chance tomorrow..Again!

This is me when I was fixing to smash him in the face with a paddle.

This is Paul. A picture speaks a thousand words.

We took the smooth water today because .. "see previous pic"

Found this cool fungus. Took a piece to try a bowdrill fire with it

Will add more tomorrow :)

The weather sucked this morning. Windy, rainy, so we chickened out on a run. The sun came out this afternoon so I took a solo on the flat water. I hit the water around 4 and paddled till 6. Was nice. The water seems low. Maybe Sandy will change that. CSugg will be here Wednesday and I'm hoping for a little water to ride. Our fall colors are a bust I think. Maybe it was just the weather but everything looked ready for winter.

There are some BIG rocks in this river.

I didn't back up to see what kind of critters was worrying this bank. My pic sucks but you can see the footy prints by the water.

The water is really clear. I'm sure clean could be another matter but the reflection of nature is cool.

Another adventure into the rats nest!

Look forward to seeing it swamper. I'm still a child with a camera. I probably need to update it but I am usually just glad to get out and wish I had some photo skills. I good day canoeing and a bad day snapping picks beats a good day doing most of the other things I have to do!

The weather was so nice today I had to hit the water for a little while. We are a small and economically challenged town and feel real lucky were have the river access points. This one is the results of a local eagle scouts service project.

The poor sycamores along the bank are about nekkid now.

I was happy to see my friend the heron. I think he's getting a little used to me. He's quite the regal bird.

Plenty of critter activity along the banks. Haven't seen a deer yet. Have found a couple spots where they drink.

Crappy pic but this is a drinking spot for the deer. The ground is really chewed up.

If you look closely in the right side of this picture you can see some finger sized fish. I found two large schools and saw 2 or 3 six inchers! I think that's a good sign for the stream.

Cool way to pass the morning.

Creek you and that Heron is like me and the Kingfisher. Almost everytime I get near a body of water if the habitat is right it seems they come perch near me. My bride keeps telling me I should get some ink of one. But I have come to be disapointed now if I don't see or at least hear them now.On the river by me one will  follow me around and talk to all his animal friends to let them know I'm in the woods. Sorry no pics from the camp out. I'm hoping to get a little time this weekend if so I'll post up.

It is a great canoe but pricey, it belongs to my dad but he don't use it much. So I slapped a Florida Kracenuer sticker on it and enjoy using every chance I get.

Here is a link with the specs.  http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/canoes/recreational/pack/

This is Dan and his Pup.

I talked about this guy to someone at the P&K and I found his pic. The story is one morning on the Withlachochee river I was out taking my son and his friend fishing. We came around this bend and I slowed down and became so inquisitive. I saw this man poling a canoe that could have been the closest thing to the Clampet's car.(Beverly Hillbilly's) I slowed down so my wake would not tip him as he was really overloaded. Started talking to Dan and he told us his short story. Basically he fell victim to a layoff and was crashing with his brother for a while and it sounded like that wore thin. So a neighbor gave him this canoe and he decided to paddle the whole river from swamp to the Gulf of Mexico. Everything in the boat is all that he owns. Dan said he had a little camping experience he was telling me that his goal was to write a book when he was done. I told him some safe places to camp and places to watch out for and gave him some food then he was on his way. It wasn't along conversation but cool. The guy had a pair and exploring on his own with a pup he pic up at the put in that had been abandoned.
