New Knife, "Intrepid" by TOKT
« on: February 27, 2012, 04:12:18 PM »
I have been wanting to do another tigerstripe G10 knife for a while. This one will be hard to lose! :D

Specs are:

9" OAL
5/32" thick O1 tool steel
1/2 height flat grind with 35 degree edge bevel
T15 Torx hardware
1/4" lanyard hole
Tigerstripe G10 scales
Exposed tang extension

Originally I had planned to just do flat ESEE style scales on this knife, but I didn't have any 3/16" thick canvas micarta. this 3/8" thick stuff really begs to be contoured ergonomically, so I gave it the full treatment. I left the edge itself pretty wide so that the knife would retain a lot of edge strength. I also wanted to keep the tip as robust as possible because the tang extension might tempt someone to take a baton to it.

So a lot of new techniques here for me. This is only my second time using bolts to attach scales. First time making a tang extension. First time not taking the scales to a high polish (I left them at around a 120 grit finish for grip). And it's only my third time doing a flat grind. I enjoy trying new things and getting a little outside my comfort zone. I'm pretty pleased with the results. From a maker's perspective, I think this is the coolest knife I've made yet.

I will work on a sheath for it in the next few days.

Thanks for looking!

That's bad as heck. It all fits together to make a great package. I'm trying not to bang on my flat grind knife too hard, but I find I'm liking it better and better. The scale profile is super duper. Can't wait to see the sheath. Maybe a polymer experiment? Very nice knife.

Thanks man. I do have a 2X2' piece of kydex that begs to be experimented with...

I have read up on, and watched quite a few kydex tutorial videos. I think this knife is a prime candidate for kydex because it's in keeping with the polymer handle. But... The only thing I've ever made from kydex is that little folding "sheath" for a Strike-all. I just haven't had the time to experiment with it. Maybe this will the the one that I learn on.

Got the sheath finished this afternoon. It's a hybrid kydex-leather sheath. I used leather for the belt loop. This allows the leather to flex so that the loop can change "length" to allow it to be mounted for horizontal and vertical belt carry. I punched 8 holes in the loop to allow for these various combinations, and it is entirely ambidextrous as well.

The two "empty" holes at the top of the knife can be clamped tight with Chicago screws to lock the knife into the sheath, or used with a rubber or leather bushing to adjust retention.

Yes. I still have a little touching up to do on the edge. I'm looking for about $235 shipped for this one.

Thanks man! Yeah it actually turned out better than I expected it to. Looking at the sketch it was flat and 2 dimensional but the finished product is really neat. I'm just wondering how it would look with a scandi grind and scales that speak to you instead of scream at you. :D

The flat grind looks great but scandi is going to leave a bit more meat on the blade, and will be easier to produce.

That is a pumpkin carver. I love that color of G10 for scales.

Very nice looking knife there PW!  It has a very authoritative look about it, and I really like the sheath.  Being able to switch things up makes it a great combo...very nice!!!
