Questions about modding finished knives?
« on: December 12, 2012, 01:38:53 PM »
I would like to know about things to watch out for and prevent knife damage.

1. On a 1095 Machette can I sand and reprofile as long as I keep it cool ie water quinchs?

2. Can you "reset" temper in and oven with scales on? This may be dumb to ask but you never know.

Thanks guys after the use of my camp Golok I have figured out a couple mods to make it more usefull. Just didn't know if I needed to break it down to just the blade blank.

You will need to get it up to between 1400 and 1500 degrees F to repair any damage that occurs from overheating, then use a conventional oven to temper it at 375 to 425 degrees depending on your target hardness.

The best possible thing to do is keep a bucket handy to dunk the blade when it gets too hot to touch.
