LAND NAVIGATION & MAP TOOLS PDF
« on: March 25, 2013, 11:16:49 PM »
I ran across this tonight and it looks like something that would be useful to save.  174 pages of land navigation, map use, gps use, compass use, etc.....something the government did that was useful.

Just looked at the file. If anyone has any inkjet transparency film they can print on, the templates at the back are a goldmine!

I thought so, too!   I PAID for one of those acre-counter grids and a map ruler just like the ones offered here for FREE, but the map ruler really doesn't need to be transparent.   My purchased ruler is printed on a piece of flexible white plastic which would probably be easier to read against a topo map.  The contrast would make the increments easier to read in black & white than on a transparent copy, I think.  I was thinking that you could copy this one on white paper and glue it to a piece of plastic sheeting or poster board and then coat it with a clear protective finish.  The plastic strip could be obtained from the side of laundry detergent bottle or something about like the thickness of one.   The grid roamer and other tools would need to be transparent, though. :P

Thanks Wolfy!

I am so bad at navigation. I really need to make a real determined effort to get the basics down. I have considered contacting the local orienteering club to get some help!

Great download!

every now and then you find something the government did that really is useful!

Thanks Wolfy.  Good stuff.  A lot of good things came out of the CA wildfire group including the Incident Command System that since 9/11 was adopted by FEMA.

Stormstaff, in the meantime try going through that PDF and give it a little thought as you do so. ;).   It's pretty complete & straightforward information, too!   If you do decide to get some hands-on help from someone who is a GOOD instructor, that PDF will make things much easier to understand in the field!

That is a really good PDF.  I think it was Wolfy that turned me on to the book The Essential Wilderness Navigator which I also found very good.

I like to practice land nav skills when I can.  In the past I just needed to find the lake for some water or the road where I parked.  I really don't have to be that accurate.  But in the SAR training to pass you have to be plus or minus 2 degrees for the test when doing an azimuth on the map.  In real life they expect even closer and those who can't hit their target pretty much right on their partner has to do the navigation.

If anyone in SW MI area wants to practice just let me know and we can set something up.  Some times our SAR group does free training sessions that non members are permitted to attend and I would be willing to pass those on as well.

Very generous of you, Draco!  I'm happy to hear that you found that book to be as useful as I thought it was. :P.   It certainly made things a lot more understandable and FUN for me :).   I bought an extra copy of it to loan out to anyone that wants to borrow it. O:-)

This link is now buried in that list of government publications in the opening post.  I thought it would be easier to find for those seeking the navigation PDF if I just copied and pasted the correct link as follows.....

https://www.nwcg.gov/sites/default/files/publications/pms475.pdf

It's still as useful as it always was.....the government, in their infinite wisdom,  just decided to make it harder to find.
