Charred Cloth Challenge
« on: August 09, 2014, 10:13:33 PM »
Over a year ago I posted a youtube video where I challenged members of the B&B forum to make flames with the smallest piece of charcloth (charred cloth) they could manage. I used a piece smaller than an American dime which is about an 18mm circle for our international members. Our own MnSportsman used an impossibly tiny piece of charcloth about 1/4" square or less.

Once you have the hang of flint and steel, making fires with increasingly smaller pieces of charcloth is a natural skills progression. The less you use, the more you stretch the resource.

So in the spirit of the Friction Fire Fellowship, I am proud to announce a new B&B member group, the CCC (Charred Cloth Challenge)!

To become a member, you must blow a tinder bundle into flame using a piece of charred cloth that will fit inside an 18mm circle (or on a US dime) and capture it on video (preferably) or in pictures. The charred cloth must be ignited using a traditional flint and steel. Post the video or pictures in this thread, and then notify the B&B staff using the following link to request membership in the group:

Request membership in Charred Cloth Challenge

I hope this inspires some of you to get out and practice some with my favorite means of primitive fire making.

I have a video wherein I have done this already, but I am going to make another one just for this challenge. I am not going to join the group myself until I have the video uploaded so that will be a bit of incentive to take some time and get it done. ;)

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing your entries!

Do the edged strikers you made count, or would you prefer we use a traditional striker/steel?

Any kind of steel striker is fine to use. Mine, the ESEE strikers, traditional forged strikers, home made file strikers, etc. Just no ferro rods or anything other than a piece of steel and a sharp rock to light the char.

I will give it a go but I have never done a video ether. Could a guy use a magnifying glass to light the char cloth?

Nope, only flint and steel may be used. A magnifying glass doesn't need charcloth, just good tinder so it wouldn't be a "challenge". :)

Here is my submission. Only the first 2 minutes or so are relevant. I used tiny piece of char and a hunk of chaga. Poof! I need to learn to use my camera a little better

 I am going for the first 50.
Good work.
edit, I just went to give it a try & need some help. I have flint but what can I use as a striker? I am not going to use my knife blade. I tried the tang and side of a few files & a old band saw blade. The most I got was 1 or 2 small sparks.
Any ideas?

This thread has a lot of info on home made strikers:

A good quality file should work if you smooth one of the edges. There is a lot more info in the link.

I'm going to be teaching my daughter's boyfriend how to make char cloth, so we will definitely give it a whirl!  Could we make a "char cloth" rocker for our patch?

Yep, we will need more people to join in order to invest in any kind of patches for this group. Not saying we won't, but it is a little early yet. :)

Here's my submission vid. It took a couple attempts. I'm still new at F&S fire after all. I started with a bundle of jute twine, but then I added some tinder fungus shavings and torn up birch bark to it.

Here's the vid. The camera was pointed down too much, so you missed a good portion me blowing the bundle to flame. :P

I can make another vid if needed.

Fun idea, PW! :)

Yep - Looking at the big picture here, we are creating the FFF patch and if it deemed appropriate,  could create a rocker for each fire skill achieved to be placed above the patch:

Flint and Steel
Bowdrill
Hand drill
The infamous "fire thong"!

So I did a video of this yesterday.  I don't know how to post videos...
which wasn't a deal breaker, because the video sucked - you couldn't see much at all...
though I did complete the challenge.

I did the challenge and, another video today.  I still don't know how to post videos, but I can post the link to the video  :)

So here is a link to video for the "challenge": https://flic.kr/p/orVVCD

If the video is not good enough, let me know & I will happily do another

Thanks PW, 'Creek, JTD, diogenes, and MnSportsman!

@ 'Creek:  If ya start now, it'll be nice by the time the temps start to drop and the wind gets cooler.  In the colder months it is nice.  It's not so great now, in the summer, as you know.

@JTD: yeah, I didn't even know she was back there watching.  Then when she came out to say "good job", I thought she had just been quietly root'n for me.

Then we watched the video - lol    We both laughed (her for the second time)  Seems a healthy laugh was also created - in addition to the fire
Good stuff.  Fun, and funny too.

Break out your flint&steel bro, do it up.

@MnSportsman:  you got that right.  A wonderful little grill it is; BUT, I gotta take that dern top off if I want to put something inside of it, lol.

It's a fun little challenge, and I'm looking forward to seeing more do it  :fire1:

I broke out the fire steel kit yesterday. Tried taking a video of this challenge 3 times.
I failed using dry grass, then crushed leaves.  Seemed really humid out, and you only get a few puffs to get the tinder going with that small a piece of char cloth.   So I took some jute inside, and pulled it apart into a very fine birds nest.  Took it outside, and got it going.. well as it went to flame, the super thin jute twine erupted pretty quick and it looked like I was throwing a fire ball at my little fire pot.  Pretty funny, and I lost a few arm hairs in the process but I can't get the video to upload to photobucket.  Tried 5 times..  Soo I'll have to try again later.   ;)

Good job, mneedham!

Tinder fungus (or false tinder fungus, whichever I used) also has a lovely fragrance when it smolders.

Nice work MrNeedham! I use the chaga to extend the life of the coal. I knew with my fumble fingers I'd probably need a little more time and heat than the little piece of char would supply.

Yeah it really does.  A little like the terpene volatiles of a pine...

Creek

Creek - Makes sense.  I had my son and daughter's boyfriend make some cloth and we probably started about 4-5 jute string bundles, with and without the chaga.  I think besides extending the time, the chaga adds mass so that the ember lays against the hair in the bundle a little better....

Good Job Mneedham!

I used some kinda changa on one of my attempts but felt it was kinda cheating since the stuff just stayed lit forever.. but I agree it smelled amazing!  Like pipe tobacco or something.  The stuff really works good.

Thanks guys and good job yourself.  LOL - I thought using a jute tinder bundle felt like cheating!  The bundles we made could have been ignited if you stared at them long enough....  I think the chaga would be a real difference maker using a natural materials that are a little harder to ignite and you lose your ember.  I think I l will start keeping some my primitive fire-making kit.
