"Victims" always cry and whine exaggerations, making things sound far worse than what actually occurred. Basing one's knowledge solely on the reports of victims will surely lead to a one sided view.

yet in most cases, it's the victors that write the history, eh?  Don't ya think that could lead to some biased, one sided reporting?    :)

Not necessarily.....

http://www.livescience.com/32087-viking-history-facts-myths.html

They had no written history of their own....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/vikings/evidence_01.shtml

Not trying to start a big thing. Those links tend to support what I said, that's how I read it. It doesn't matter to me much whether people watch a TV show or not. The only reason I posted was because I think it is somewhat important for us - good, ole school americans- to examine, question, where we get our ideas.

I have found that this series is really hard to follow.  I do not know what the hell is going on about half of the time.  Time to stop thinks me.

pretty much gave up after watching half the first season.  Just not interested in the subject matter.  A nasty, bloody, brutish  culture, as intent on killing each other as their enemies.  None of the characters are 'likeable',  and their goals & aspirations are inimicable to everything I believe in.

Other's opinions will vary, of course, and they are just as correct as mine are.  No argument from me.

I missed an episode while we were out on the road, but I think I'm caught up again.  I plan to continue watching the series......nothing else on at that time anyway AND I find the boats, costuming, town life and other aspects of Viking life to be very interesting and well researched.  As far as the story line goes, it's about what I expected.......VERY loosely based on anything that really happened, but it is 'based' on actual events that have been recorded like their raids into France and England.  Reminds me of what they did with the story of Hugh Glass in THE REVENANT.

.......and yeah, HAIL RAGNAR! :hail:

If you believe half of what is told about the Viking proclivity for rape, you would think we were ALL of Nordic decent.

Nordic, Germanic, Goths, and so forth were all about the same.  So were the Franks, Romans, Iberians, and Mongols.

One thing people don't realize is that the Nordic people Embraced Christianity with greater fervor than any other race as well, when Rollo invaded Normandy for instance, to this day they have the greatest Cathedrals and architecture all done by Christian  " Vikings" . So, if you or your descendants come from the Normandy region of France, Your of Nordic Descent!! Also, in 1066 William the conqueror of Normandy invaded England at the battle of Hastings took the Crown from king Harold and took over England. all Nordic!! Also, at the same time the Vikings invaded England on the Northern side of Britain.  Hail, Ragnar!!!

I enjoyed last night's episode for the footage of the boats.   The big Viking canoes are the epitome of versatility and an art form when it comes to the clinker-style of construction....... .I think, anyway.

It is a time investment, each almost 1.5 hour long. Like I have read and heard from others there was similarity between the scandis and other euro tribes, in both actions and beliefs. It just happened that more of the Norse was preserved.
As it relates to bushlore, maybe some of us from European ancestors wonder where that draw to be in the woods and in nature comes from. It's worth looking into.

I want to see Bjorn take it out on Erlendur  >:D  :spider:. Ragnar was generous to let him live when Horik was killed for betrayal, but I guess he was a bit too generous.

I wonder how much the directors will keep to history in the show itself.

****Possible spoiler/s below, so keep yer eyes up if ye want to be surprised****

The siege of Paris, to my knowledge didn't happen yet in history in accordance with the rest of the story-line. The real Rollo also wouldn't have become the Duke of what would become Normandy yet. Halfdan, Harald Finehair, Ubba, and the other Lothbrok brother (can't remember his name lol) did raid deep into the Saxon and Angle kingdoms, taking out Northumbria first, then Mercia and later East Anglia. Guthrum also showed up to take advantage, and he caused more trouble for the West Saxons than any other Danish or Norse leader. So when Lagertha said that Guthrum was "destined for greatness", she is right, and I imagine the directors will follow his story line from history. Guthrum became powerful enough to bring Wessex, the last Saxon kingdom, to its knees, and it was only when Alfred defeated him at Ethandun that the tables were turned. Guthrum became a Christian and king of East Anglia, eventually an ally (a very "loose" ally) to Alfred. Many Danish earls and leaders were killed at the battle of AEsc's Hill long before, when the West Saxon troops triumphed over the Danes. If I remember right, Halfdan was killed on a raid into Ireland.

In any case, it will be interesting to see how the directors continue the show. Personally, I like the blend of relatively accurate history and historical events with alternative story-lines and added-in drama. Makes the show very interesting :).

What's Cool about Rollo is the french King Gave Him a Pile of Gold and Normandy to just leave the rest of France alone!!!! Provided he embrace the Christian faith. Embrace he did, Normandy is full of Beautiful architecture from the Christian Northmen.!!!!

It's all spoiled in the Bernard Cornwell Saxon Tales series (reading the historical notes at the end of each story). :)
Of course, the directors could choose to change things around a bit....Ragnar himself, if he ever existed, was captured by king Aelle and killed in a pit full of snakes according to legend. But I think the directors will take a different route.

Speaking of other stories, another great show is on BBC, called 'The Last Kingdom'. It is named after the first book in the Saxon Tales series, replicating the story-lines in those novels. It gives an interesting perspective because the protagonist is a Saxon, yet was raised by Danes.

Next episode of THE VIKINGS starts in 45 minutes.   The program REAL VIKINGS comes on immediately following tonight's episode......a very good series on Viking sites and artifacts found in them.  It also helps explain some of the actions that are taking place in the series and why they chose to reenact them.
