Leather Handle building question?
« on: August 15, 2017, 05:52:41 AM »
Morning folks been a bit! I have watched several great tutorials on stacked leather handles for knives and the process seems pretty straight forward. My question is I have several pieces of leather strips kind of like laces from farmers bundle or remnant packs that I have picked up over the past few months. Would it be possible to use all those scrap pieces to wrap a knife handle instead of stacking and still achieve the same kind of results?

Thanks,
Pete

most of the leather in farmer bundles and remnant packs are highly corrosive due to the way they are tanned.
I would not recommend using them for a handle unless you have a way to protect the metal so it's never in contact with the leather.

I have no idea about the properties of the leather, but I would think that if the leather is soaked thoroughly enough with the resin that you would be fine.  Here's a vid I did a while back on wrapping a handle with cloth that shows one way to do the process.

When you rolled on that fluorescent pink stuff I thought you'd lost your mind, but the end result was quite striking!  Not something I'd probably pick, but very attractive in the finished form.....I was really surprised.

A very good instructional video, Crash......thanks for posting it!
