Title: Anyone interested in a new knife?
Post by: Red on January 03, 2015, 05:19:50 PM
I am working on 4 right now, 3 are blades not of my design, and one is all me. I had a Bernie Garland blank laying around, a blank that originated from Mick Spain in the UK, and a BCNWO1 that I traded Woodbear Knives for a while back. Just in time for everyone's Holiday bills to hit, but I promise they will be worth it..

Will update tomorrow with some finished pics.

Can't wait to see these completed Red, those scales are something!

That bevel polish is killer!!!  Are you getting that off the grinder?  And if so, how if I may ask...that's something else!

Picture dump:

You can see where I dug the thumb scallop too deep on one side, past the scale and into the liner. This was my first time trying this handle style, and it only cost me a $40 set of scales to learn the right way to do it lol!

I've maintained for the last couple of years that the BCNW knife is one of the finest looking bushcraft knives out there.
I think that that is one of the best renditions I've seen of it, deep scallop notwithstanding.
I did a mimic of the scallops on one knife and it took a few blanks before I got it right.
Well done.

Never had a bad trade with my buddy creek.  I wasn't using the Bernie Garland and traded with someone unassociated with this forum.

This will fill the void that trade left nicely.  I've been wanting a redneck knife for a long time now.

You should've just scalloped the other side and said you meant to do it that way :P   we'd still a been drooling over it!!!!!  I'm really liking the bevel polish you're getting!

Some folks would call something like that flaw on their stuff, as a "character mark", and tried to pass it off without a thought for others... You didn't.

Proud of ya that ya offered the knife up to be seen as it is, & let folks know what happened. I think sadly, that many folks wouldn't have done that. And since ya did show it to everyone ,  doing that my friend, I believe is a mark of YOUR good character, Red. Good on ya for the honesty!
 ;D

ETA: I have been watching & waiting for a Redneck knife. Perhaps one of these? Time will tell. My wishes sometimes overwhelm my wallet. Discipline helps. ;)

Thanks dano. I use an old 600 grit belt, and I spray it down we wd40. Its not a perfect mirror, but pretty close.

And JB,
Thanks for the kind words brother. You are certainly welcome to look at any of my knives, but if you really want to spring for one, we might as well let you pick the handles and such, truly make it what you want. It a lot of money to spend, might as well have some say as to how it comes out 😃

That's undoubtedly true, but, so far I've been lucky enough to avoid investing in a decent set of water stones.....GOOD ones of a decent size are pretty spendy for an old age pensioner! ???

I beat the crap out of my Redneck knife.  Then had to face the music asking Steve to fix it  (He actually offered, truth be known).  I'm still trying to get around my slobbish behaviour with a custom blade.  :P

Lately it spent the night underwater in a swamp.

I'm hopeless.

LOL!  This sounds more like a testimonial to Redneck Knives  :choptree:

I've used mine a good deal and I am very surprised by the edge holding capability it has.  I show it off to friends and they can't get over how sharp it is.  Then I tell them I've batoned with it and carved up kindling on multiple occasions and have not sharpened it.  They laugh and tell me I'm full of it.

It took me a LONG time to get a good formula for a good HT, Just as my good friend TrentU here lol! I was sending him blades for months for HRC testing before I was able to nail a consistent recipe. Now, 4 years later I have a HRC tester and just occasionally spot check blades to make sure they are in line. I have a good formula, and I am glad people are starting to see it :)

I beat my 3 to death without reservation. I am thinking about sending them back to make pretty again though. I've rubbed mine on the strop a time or two. That's about all the sharpening they've ever needed.  One of them does need a logo.   :chopwood:

Steve's HT is spot on. He has put a lot of time, money and research into perfecting it. I still find myself researching it. :)
HT is what keeps me humble when I'm playing at making my backyard (mostly file) knives. It's kinda like playing Dr on yourself - you might get the job done, but you're never really quite sure it's done right...

I got mine today.  Thank you Steve for an extraordinarily sub-par knife and the "extras".

I couldn't wait to use it so I grabbed a piece of seasoned black locust from my wood pile.

All I can say is "IT CARVES BLACK LOCUST LIKE BUTTER"

And for anyone not familiar with black locust, it dulls out my chainsaw chains fast, the stuff is very hard on tools, but I was getting curls off it with no effort and no change to the shaving sharp edge when I was done.

Subpar my ass.

Thinking ya mean way better than "subpar", madmax, at least I think that's what your saying in the quote, and I agree!
:)

I always thought "sub par" meant better than most, like in the game of golf where they set the course to "par" for the amount of strokes it takes most people to do the course, & if you do things better than, or less than "par", like with "birdies", & "eagles" for scoring "sub par", you are "above the rest", or "better than most"... Not for "sub par", to mean, "sub standard"...

So, thinking the way I described it as compared to golf, Red is better than sub par" ,in my book!

Anyway...Looks like I am gonna have to just try & get a knife in the lineup for later with ya, Red. When I have more $$ coming in, to let extra $$ go out.
;)

These are going fast it seems. Pretty good deals for those who are getting them.

That one is the Bernie Garland Woodlore blade. It's getting the green scales with white liners, true Bernie Style

Should end up something like this one, but a woodlore blade

Sub par means less than satisfactory.  I always thought that Red named it that as a bit of "sarcasm" because his knives are very much better than average.

Sub par is good in golf though.

Well JB, it may have been before you showed up here, it was literally 2 days after we started this place, is when that joke started. I was sent a rather nasty email from a certain forum administrator, in which I was told "It is well known that you steal other knife maker's designs and make them your own, and your fit and finish is not up to par".

It was a derogatory email meant to cut deep, explaining my "lack of success" on another forum. So Ron and I decided that I should change my brand to "SubPar Knives", but I never followed through with it.

Anyway, that's where the whole "sub par" thing comes from ;)

I will say this though, EVERY knife that I made and listed for sale, sold. The only one's that didn't sell were knives I didn't make myself.

Round 2 is coming up soon, maybe even tomorrow night (if this (http://bladesandbushcraft.com/Smileys/krystl-white/censored.gif)ing headache will ever go away)...

This is my 2012 model Woodlore.. Will come complete with sheath and logo etching if preferred.. Only one more of this blade style left, I have since had the profile changed, so anyone who likes the feel of this one should consider it... Sixfooter has laid claim to the very last one already....

Well, I do remember the term being tossed around here from back around when I joined, but was not in on the reason behind it. Thanks for letting me in on it now. Funny!
:)

Anyway, I am gonna stick to the golf term for "sub par" as a definition, and what I wrote in my earlier post. BTW...I am not surprised about TradeMarkUSA folks sending you an email like the one you mentioned. Not surprised at all.

Regardless, Thanks for letting me know the "Skinny" on that background stuff, & looking forward to seeing more sharps from ya!

And you seriously think I'll ever match that, Red? Lol! Man, I appreciate the encouragement, but dude, that's a beautiful knife right there! I honestly can't see how anything I'd make would ever turn out like that! :D

Why not?

Well, mostly because they look perfect. Clean, polished mirror finish... Clean crisp lines. Scales are perfect, both the same and square in the handle, not a trace of a gap anywhere... Honestly, I'm not sure I have the skills, and the patience it would take to make that. I just can't see it.

Red, I'm not flattering you - I own one of your knives - so believe me when I say I WISH I could make a knife like that.

But if you keep saying it, I might start believing it...

You sound just like I did, whining to Trent that I couldn't do it as good as him. It doesn't happen overnight, but if you stick with it, you can get there ;)

Now he is better than I am! Anyone can do anything as long as they focus and practice. Steve put a lot of hours and research into his skill.

LOL! Ok, I'll quite going on about it, but you better not get bent outta shape when I make a better knife than you!!!  Look out, those footsteps coming up behind you is me!!! :)

(Nah. Still don't believe it.)

Thanks Steve, I'll toast her with a cold glass of said sangria when she gets here.
I gave away a lot of knives this year to all the grandkids and some to friends that I had collected from several makers, but this one they will have to pry from my cold dead hands.
Good job and please take a few photos with the whole package when done, your photos way exceed mine and I want to show it off.

I went right out to my young apple tree and trimmed some limbs off, debarked and made some feather sticks, got it all dirty and sappie.
cleaned the blade, hit the strop.

so is the Mick Spain blank up next?  I remember that one now that I think about it.  It should make for a decent scandi for someone.  Also did you, or are you planning to test it's heat treat?  Would be curious just to see where it was as to how good of a job Mick did on it.

I did test it, its HRC58. I had no doubt, Mick is a really good maker. And yes, that one is up next, then it's on to custom orders that have been waiting over a year now. I wanted to get these blanks done so I could use them to work out any rust I may have gotten taking such a long break. I am feeling pretty good about them now, so after this Mick blade, I will be doing SIXFOOTER's knife, and a couple more. Then I will start taking orders again.
