Outdoor Envy's replacement..
« on: March 15, 2015, 05:52:53 PM »
Well, this was a rather tricky build. OE wanted my old original woodie blade shape, with a 3/4 high convex grind. Definitely learned the limitations of my 2x42 grinder, and the additional 30" of belt on a 2x72 is definitely a must for that kind of grinding. Even removing the platen only gave me about 3" of slack, not nearly enough for what I needed to do. So I had to get creative, and this is the result..

I also learned that on these lighter handle materials, I need to drill the loveless bolts to exact size. I always drill 1/32" over to give the glue room to set on the bolts and lanyard tube. It is clearly visible on this one, it looks like I burned the bolts. Totally not the case, just the glue being visible. Anyhow, I have updated him along the way, and he seems pretty happy about the outcome, so once he gets it in his hands he will either praise me or trash me lol :P

Nice! I miss the old blade shape. I'm a fan of natural micarta, too.
What's that smell?

Hell, I'd just say I did the Loveless bolts that way on purpose!   I think it looks better to have them 'accented' the way you did it, with the light colored micarta......kind of sets the whole handle off a little more.

I thought the exact same thing!  I think I'd rather see just a tad and know it's there, than lose it in the grinding process and not know it.   I think that looks great and will be a great user for sure!!  I also like the makers mark on the spine side, very nice addition!!

I'm curious now that you've made a few Red, how are you liking the convex, or should I say are you liking convex profiles more?

I don't like it at all, but that's mainly because my grinder makes it it very hard to do with such little slack. It would probably be the easiest grind to do given a 72" belt and 6" of slack to play with, but it becomes a real PITA on a little 2x42 with practically no slack.  I told OE today that I probably wouldn't try it again until I upgrade my grinder.

All that said, I still wouldn't use one, I am partial to my Sabre grind with a good secondary. Easy to sharpen, easy to maintain, and easy to get nicks and chips out.

Reminds me of my convex woodlore. The more I use that knife, the better I like it. That is a super looking knife.

Thanks guys!  And a big thanks to Red for taking on my project.  I had lots of requests and did a great job accommodating them.  I can't wait to use it  >:D

Very cool outing thread on the way...  8)

Looks great, Red! I agree with the others on the bolts. I like the accent or contrast. Nice work!

Nope, he didn't want the profile etched, but still wanted the brand on it somewhere. So I did that :)

Wow, what an ugly knife. I wouldn't be caught dead...

Yeah, well, we all know that's^ a lie! It's amazing, Red! :hail: I honestly wouldn't have even paid attention to the bolts if you hadn't of mentioned it. Every knife I've tried to make (or put handles on) have the same thing happening with the pins.

OE, you must be thrilled! I know I would be! Looking forward to seeing some bush shots!

Love this knife!

Haha, thanks KK.  I'm just better with a convex.  I used them for too long apparently, so I'm not going to get used to a scandi anytime soon.  I figured I'd embrace it and have Steve make one for me.  I have two others and they are good, but left me wanting.  This knife is the culmination of my wants in a knife.  Can't wait for it to get here!

on a side note I think the contrasted bolts look good too.  Everything is a shade of brown so its a handsome knife

Yeah I remember seeing the newer blank you had from Red.  I assume that was a kit you got?  Looking forward to what comes of it.

that's definitely a nice set you have there.  You're the only I can recall with the convex edge.  Atleast that hangs around here enough and posts pics of it now and then.  You'll soon to have company though in that area...  :)

Got it in and it is just what I wanted!  Red did a great job on getting the handle shaping and thickness to be spot on for what I wanted.  The grind was really good too for improvising, however he decided to get it done.  I hope he kept the cursing me to a minimum as he did it!  LOL!   Well all and all I am one happy customer.  This was fun to do with him and the end result is really something to be proud of.  Well I ran outside and messed with it for about an hour.  Here's a couple shots of some curls.  More to come from future outing threads...

Thanks Dan!  Wasn't trying to win a beauty contest but since it turned out this sweet I ain't complaining, haha

We better soak it in now.  I'll take care of it but I'm gonna knock the new off pretty quick.  So it won't look this pretty again.

Mine is 5/32 too. I can't imagine not having mine forever. I seemed to have needed a little time to "get used to it". I have wondered what i would upgrade to. I sure look forward to seeing you become best friends with ours. It's a hard life out there ain't it.?

I missed this some how. Congrats OE, she's a beauty all dress-up with red. And I see it on your blog as well.

Steve you did good, I need to get some photos up of mine and of the one OE let me take possession of so he could get this one. I need to finish polishing her back up and do a photo shoot along with a few others I've been working on.
