« on: November 21, 2017, 07:29:43 AM »
well I've been wanting to order some 01 tool steel.
and was wanting to know the proper oil to quench it.
i read that 01 has better edge retention than say 1095?
is that so? so what say you.
i'm ordering the steel this morning.

I prefer Canola oil (less stink).  Make sure you heat it up to about 120 - 140.  O1 does not like a cold quenchant.

Thanks crash i have a old turkey roaster you know the hamilton beach.
it goes upto 500'degrees and my quenching tank will fit right in.
i can believe the difference in cost between 1095 and 01 when you buy
1/1/2x36x3 /16ths. wow

I used mineral oil and it seemed to work well.

I use peanut oil - it works as well as canola and has a higher flash point.
plus I can get lightly used peanut oil from folks frying turkeys tomorrow.

the actual best quenchant for O1 (& 1095) is Parks 50 -- which is a petroleum blend specifically for HT-ing metal.
