Oil Lamps & Lanterns - Any tips/tricks you can share?
« on: October 27, 2021, 05:41:55 PM »
So what advice for oil lamps and lanterns do you all have?  It's recently peaked my interest but I don't know much.  So what oils are good and what kind of brands and styles should I be on the lookout for at antique shops, etc.?

We have an old thread that delved into 'kerosene lanterns' pretty intensely.  I think about everything that you want to discuss or learn about oil lanterns & lamps was touched upon in that thread.

I use oil lamps and lanterns regularly along with candles. Have for a long time. Like the quality of the light. Both are still made on old designs while going antique is a whole nother thing. I just use what works for me Don't find them good for reading but otherwise they work fine in the cabin.

It's likely there are sets of rules for wick trimming, fuel scenting and other related things people being as they are but for the few i use regularly ot doesn't seem to matter. Not a lot of places carry wicks these days so it might pay to stock up when you come across them.

Candles now, well, that gets complicated. But i tend to prefer the light from the beeswax kind.

When camping that is about all I use.  I like the light they give off.  While I have quite a few liquid fuel and propane mantled lanterns, they are a little too bright for me for woods time.

I use them outside at Rendezvous.  Candle lamps inside (safety).
