The mailman dropped off two packages today. The small envelope contains the new hammock straps from Arrowhead Equipment. Yesterday I got a package with the carbiners to go with the straps. Looking forward to going out and hanging on Monday.

The larger box contains a like new Military goretex modular sleep system bag. These bags have been getting alot of good reviews and I am looking forward to using on my next camping trip. Hopefully I can get some colder weather for the trip.

Awesome for you Grey. Would love to see your thought on the sleep system. I have been thinking about one for some time now. Looking forward to it.

Yeah, I'd like to hear thoughts on sleep systems and hammocks too.. I tried to navigate Hammock Forums about that, but I feared I'd hear all about underquilts and topquilts and I'd rather NOT use those. I overnight when it's warm, I don't go out when it's colder than 50-60 degrees at night. I don't see why I couldn't make do with a woobie or a wool blanket. Thoughts?

For reference, likely buying a Warbonnet Traveler.

For my hammock I have grand trunk double nothing fancy.

I am no hammock expert but I don't think underquilts and topquilts are needed for weather over 30 degrees. My first weekend in the hammock it got down to 40 degrees and all I had was two cheap sleeping bags. I sleep in one and had the other one underneath me. I believe with the new setup I would be fine to at least 30 degrees.

I had talked to a fellow member on the same trip and he was sleeping in the back of his truck with the Military goretex modular sleep system and he said he was fine with the temperatures.

Well I got out today to try the new suspension system for my hammock. I was previously using a do it yourself version of this and it was a pain to adjust the straps because you had to tie a half hitch after coming out of the rings or the straps would slip.

Here is the contents of the kit.



Had to untied the factory ends and pull through the new endless loops with the cinch buckles through the hammock ends.



After pulling them through grab the cinch buckles and pull them through the loop to make a cow hitch/larkshead knot and your are done with that end.



On the tree end I installed the carabiners to the pre-made loops.



Here is a close-up of the new cinch buckle kit.



While trying to relax in the hammock this blimp flies overhead.



The straps worked great and easy to adjust. I didn't see a need for a half-hitch after the cinch buckles.

On the camping trip in two weeks I will be trying out the new military modular sleeping bag.

I love my MSS.  Just takes a bit of getting used to when connecting all three bags.  The Bivy is nice, but for hot summer nights I go with a belgium one I got from Sportsmans Guide a while back.  I don't wear much when I sleep in the summer and it is silky smooth on the inside while the gortex is rougher. 

Once you figure out what you need with the MSS it really becomes a versitile piece of kit.

The mail lady came today and yesterday dropping off some goods.

Yesterday:
3 sweet pieces of some flint rocks given to me by Greyhound.  These things are awesome!  I never had any pieces like these and can throw sparks with my strike-all and these rocks like a firesteel.  It is amazing!


Today:
my Fieldcraft by Brother's of Bushcraft B.O.B.  I really like this knife.  It feels great in the hand and everything about it (including the sheath) seam well crafted.  I will never be able to use this knife, though, I could never purposely put a nick on it.   :-[

I think that's my favorite offering from TOPS. I haven't seen any of them in person but if someone asked me which TOPS knife I'd like to have one of those would be a likely choice.

And, that looks like a pretty slick suspension system Greyhound.

I typically don't like tactical looking knives, but TOPS has a few that I've almost pushed the trigger on... That's a nice one, but I've always fawned over those Mohawk Hunters - they seem like they'd be good woods knives.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the flint.

That blade looks like a winner. Time for that blade to get some bush time.

The suspension system worked great on its first trail run. Looking forward to using on a camping trip next weekend.
