"Truth, Justice, and a better tomorrow!"
What the he!! was wrong with the old "Truth, Justice and the American way!"?
In news articles from CNN, Variety, DC Comics, New York Times, Fox8news, and many other outlets, Superman's motto is changing.
According to some of the news articles, the original motto started on radio in '42. America had just experienced Pearl Harbor and Superman was there to boost American spirits. Fighting Germans, Italians and Japanese, he instilled a sense of patriotic pride in American listening audiences.
Now Superman may be an illegal alien that jumped the border via a meteor crashing into a cornfield but his upbringing by an American couple and his history of exploits promoting America through the decades would seem to cement his patriotism to America.
"We need it to better reflect his international status" a DC Comics representative said.
Well, If the "American way" is Justice, Peace and Prosperity, then what's wrong with the old motto?
I know this is just an imaginary cartoon character, but it is a part of Americana. Saturday morning radio and TV programming were instrumental in forming the values and mores of a nation. Truth, Justice, and the American way seemed to sum up the basic sentiments of all of them. They were like our own national cheering section. Nothing wrong with that.
Sometimes it's the little subconscious things that make us what we are. Superman was one of those things. Popeye was another. He would sing,
"I is was I is and I am what I am". That little saying runs through my mind on occasion. Both when I do something extraordinary and when I can't seem to get something right no matter how hard I try. Sometimes you just have to accept your limitations and rejoice in the skills you do have. Popeye reminds me that I can accept that, and move on.
Radio and television have played a big part in making America a leading force in the world. Broadcast media brought the common folk information for farming, animal husbandry, household maintenance, cooking, canning, food safety, automobile servicing and troubleshooting and the list goes on and on. Educating the nation and making our nation smarter and stronger. And it was/is all free for the taking, only requiring a receiver. What a great deal. What a great country. I'm glad I'm here.
