Certainly not a holiday but well worth remembering.

August 6 1945 was the first time a nuclear weapon was used.  Hiroshima in Japan saw 140,000 people killed. And, of course, a nuclear weapon was used again a few day later at Nagasaki.

Regardless of opinions then or now this was an event that fundamentally altered human society, the effects of which we continue to live with today.
