Monthly Project - June 2012
« on: June 01, 2012, 05:27:14 AM »
June 2012 Project

For those that don't know what the Monthly Project is, well to put it simply, i/we post up a bushcraft project that i or others who have PM'd me with an idea, think would be a good challenge for people to undertake for fun and then you, if you want to take part of course, have until the end of each calendar month to complete the project, bonus is, there are only a few simple to understand rules

 1. You must post up photographic or video evidence in this thread to prove you actually made and/or undertook the project

 2. There are no prizes, only the satisfaction of knowing you have increased your skill set and understanding of bushcraft.

 3. There is no such thing as failure, it's a learning experience, so even if you think your project doesn't come up to scratch,  still post your attempt up, as you will have learned from the experience, so to help others to learn & understand, post it up regardless, nobody is going to ridicule you for trying, material wise you can use ANYTHING that you find whilst out and about, including other peoples trash, after all isnt Bushcraft about improvising, adapting and overcoming?

4.  See 1 thru 3 above

Erm, that really is about it, this is not a competition, it's all about learning and having fun.

If anyone has any ideas for a project, just drop them through to me on a PM as it gets hard after a while to keep coming up with ideas to post up for a project.

So this months project is................. ....

Make a Figure 4 Dead Fall Trap

Thanks got to Red for this months challenge and thanks to everyone else who suggested some projects, they will ALL get used in coming months.

A new challenge will be issued on the 1st Juy 2012.

Have fun.

Here is mine. The figure 4 is the very first deadfall trap I made as a young feller. This is how I do it:

The tools & the stick I used. ( I cheated, I used a swede saw for a couple of cuts & to make the 3 pieces I needed):

10-15 minutes later, all the pieces made & ready to set:

Set with a concrete slab  use for my tip firering. Beer there for scale & I was thirsty:

Closer look... &  had ta finish my brew:

Now disassembled & sitting in the tipi fire-ring for kindling. If anyone wants a close up of the pieces, just let me know, or they will get burned in the next week or so. Or.. DUke will drag them off & chew them up.. He likes to eat stcks.
;)

Have fun!

Um, I think that the bait is supposed to be on the inside part of the trigger, under the deadfall. Not sure what you'll catch with beer though...  :P

aww man.. I was so hoping it was something I could do this time around.  LOL     This figure 4 thing has not made any sense to me at all.    :S

WW.
On particularly rough days when I'm sure I can't possibly endure, I like to remind myself that my track record for getting through bad days so far is 100% and that's pretty good.

If ya got Beer......Does it matter if ya catch anything on the other end of the stick?

I gave it a go today and wasn't completely successful but I learned a few things along the way. I underestimated how tight fitting the parts need to be and I need to cut the trigger shorter. This one was way too touchy when I got it under a deadfall and I managed to drop that damn log on my wrist about a half dozen times  :-[  I made this one huge thinking it would be easier, but I dunno... I think I'll go smaller next time. Here's a pic of the trigger lying on the ground...that's a full sized woodlore for scale

Dunno if anyone "judges"..Prolly not.
 ;)

Looks like a "Figure 4" trap set to me..
 :D

It's all about the "Doing" as far as I would be concerned. Looks to me lke ya "Did".
 ;)

The best part about doing some of these things. Whether ya have done them for years or for the first time. Is that ya "did" it at all.
As ya all know... doing something with your own efforts, teaches most people, much better than reading or just looking at anothers' efforts..
 :D

  in my book!

this is my best one yet, seems like the bigger they are the easier.

that log was pretty soaked and heavy, I think this would have been pretty effective. the upright failed to eject with the rest of the pieces but I think it would actually cause kind of a guillotine effect and maybe lead to a more humane kill. it left a pretty deep impression in the debris under the log.
video subplot: learning to trust the leash beast.

Many folks place a flat piece of wood, some bark, or a rock under the post stick when actually using this for real trapping. So the "post" stick does fall to the ground, with the weight load.

I only mention the above, for some folks who may not know... (not trying to pull a "Cliff Claven" of Cheers fame snippet.)
;)

well that was definitely a more 'explosive' drop, hit a lot harder too. So I guess the rock caused the upright to fall some and rotate. allowing the log to drop faster and cleaner

it made a nice thump under foot that you can't hear in the video
video subplot #2: objects in frame are father than they appear..

also! somehow I forgot about these videos in the last couple months. Ron Hood, very worth the watch

I figured you would see by "doing".
:D

Glad to see it worked for ya.
I watched the Ron H. vids ya posted, & that is basically just how I did mine too. My Dad taught me most of the ones I know. His growing up in the Depression( Hoover times) made it sometimes a necessity ta get fresh meat without ammo which cost money that sometmes was scarce. Thus the traps/snares were used a lot, up in the mountains.
:)

I tried again today and was successful. I still need to do some experimenting as far as trigger sensitivity but I got the basics down now.

Thanks MNS for the useful info on the rock under the fulcrum!

No sweat. If I can help, I'd like to be able to do it.
 :)

Glad to hear there's beengood success for ya & everyone else.

In regard to sensitivity, try not to go completely 90 degrees with the "upright/post" & the "bait-stick", make it a lil more "open". You can leave one at 90 deg., but try changing the other to a 90-95 degree. ( I think I got that degree setting right??  :-\ ) I could show it, but not sure I can explain it here in words the rightway...?? I tried though. ;) )
In the Ron Hood videos, he shows how to use "rounding" to accomplish makng a more "hair-trigger" effect. By changing the "trigger to uprght" joint so that it does not "Lock", so much as just "hold", will make for a better trap "set". Rounding the outside(s) of that particular joint will help do the same.

Hey! Experiment...
 :D
You may need this type of skill to survive & feed yurself/family or others someday. Best time to practice this, is when ya "Don't" need ta use it.
 :D

I hope to see more here. This is Bushcraft/Woodmanship at its' best. Sharing info... I like learning, as much as the doing.. Most folks here seem to think the same way, & that is Outstanding!

Ok, crappy cell phone pics. AND... "backyard bushcraft". :taunt:

The trigger is Chinese Elm, the log is lodgepole pine (I think).

I reached my beer quota in my mid 20's I think.   8)

Seriously, I like a good beer from time to time, but I've always been a social drinker. I just don't care for it if there isn't someone to share it with, and my wife doesn't drink.

Did mine in the woods today

Raw materials

Carved

and in action

The shape ont he rear of the trigger stick, gives a very fine trigger, saw the shape in the wood and thought, i can use that, it's held in place by friction alone, rather than a stick in a notch as normal

what i used to make it

Kep.... ya showoff..
 ;)
Fine job!

That diagonal sticks "end" off the trigger stick does look like it would be a possible advantage.
Good use of what was at hand. Of course puttin in them sharpies doen't hurt...

 :D

P.S. - about time ya got this done.....  was beginning to worry.... Crooked log may not hit the ground under that trigger, but it was the "Doins"... not the action... Plus, putting in them "sharpies" at the end would never hurt...

 ;)

This ain't my first figure four rodeo, although it may appear that way by the look of my trap! :P

Another cold snowy night here. *Trapped* inside, so I *figured* I'd do another one of these projects.

The version I've done is based on one I saw a while back online. (Here it is: http://www.hedgehogleatherworks.com/Figure-Four-Deadfall-Trap-Improved-s/51.htm) I find this version easier to set while being simultaneously less likely to fail.

Could've used a little more work here but it still holds:
