First Aid tip
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:28:45 AM »

My wife suffers from a chronic back problem she's had since she was a kid,  every once in a while if she bends a certain way or moves too quick it hits her,  and it usually takes a few weeks to recover,  during that time she's using a heating pad or an ice gel pack for relief.
Well it happened again a couple of weeks ago,  we keep a couple of ice packs in the freezer for just such an occasion,  one of them finally let go,  so it's off to the pharmacy to buy another one,  our local pharmacy didn't have the one we needed in stock, but they could special order one,  about a week and $40.00 would do it.
But, the Pharmacist had a suggestion,  she quickly left me at the counter and ran down an aisle and returned with a bottle of rubbing alcohol and handed it to me,  she instructed me to half fill a gallon sized zip lock freezer bag with tap water,  then add i/2 the bottle of rubbing alcohol to the water,  get most of the air out of the bag and zip it closed,  next, place the bag inside a second freezer bag,  get the air out and seal that one and lay it flat in the freezer for a day or two.
It took a couple of days for the water/alcohol mix to gel up,  but by the second day I had a cheap ice gel pack that was colder than the others we've had,  lasted longer,  and re-froze just as quickly as the store bought ones.

I tend to forget something that my parents taught me a long time ago,  that's if you have a minor medical problem,  ask your local pharmacist before taking it to your doctor,  the chances are they know the answer,  and their advice will likely be better and cost you less than a doctors visit.

I like that ice-pack trick. I don't really use ice-packs much, but definitely good to know!
What's that smell?

Great tip thanks for sharing. Pharmacists know a lot and it is good to pick their brains if you know one well enough and they have time. Most love to share their knowledge and love to talk to people.

I learned that one quite awhile ago and its a good useful tip.    : )   Heres something to add to it..  if you have a food vacuum sealer, make some smaller bags ( 2x3 inch) filled with just water. I will make the bag, freeze the water in it before sealing shut. (trim sharp corners off)  Put those into the alchohol/water mixture before putting that into the freezer.   These little bags will freeze solid and keep the alchohol /water mixture cold much longer.  :)

I too have back probs and I know oh so well that 'wrong' move and how long it takes to pull out of it.  I feel for your wife.   I hope she recovers soon.

The one she likes the best is 12"x 14",  that would be great,  thanks.

I cannot tell you how a gel pack is made or what is in it without violating legal trade secrets.  But, if I had to make one in a survival type event I?d make a batch of Jell-O and put it in the double freezer bags like Moe suggested and let it set up as flat as I could, then freeze the resulting Jell-O pack.
If you puncture the freezer bags set up Jell-O will not leak all over the place like salted water will.

WW1  I had this vision of having a raspberry jello  ice bag on my forehead for a migrane...and it leaked...  red streaks all over my face...   dreaming about raspberries and how GOOD they tasted....  ha ha ha.

I like this idea...  *nods*     I might look forward to a migrane....    mmm mmm....

whoa.. I just about missed all the pictures, they didnt come in at first.     What a wonderful time that looks to be!   I'd give my eyeteeth to go to a meet like that.   :)

I just gotta ask...   when you gather together like that , do you ask everyone to bring something like a potluck?    Or does one person do all the planning and divvy up the cooking between cooks?

Thank you so much for sharing these pictures.    Wich one is you and wich one is Moe?   :)   Inquiring minds gotta know...  just gotta....

Moe is behind his coleman stove, with the hat on.  I've never been photographed.  Normaly I bring the main dish, and let people bring side dishes.  I bring breakfast too.

The guy with the dog talking about the bows and axes is Ronnie, my mentor, kayaking partner, best friend.  The guy in the center of the bead making photo is my other close friend.  He was the original crew chief of the Woods Hole mini sub  "Alvin" and recovered the H bomb lost off Spain.  You never know where real American Heros willl show up do you?

Its good to see kids there on those meets too.   I like that.

I just had to ask hubby why there was fuzzy things tied to the bow strings.    I've a super curious mind.. :)    And that woven quiver.. beautiful!

We are gonna have to put a bounty of a head shot of ya WW1.... *big grin*
