The thrills of camping

Hello all.  I am sure that being outdoors men you all love to camp.  What would say the definition of camping is?  Does taking a motor home and having modern conveniences count as really camping?  Any thoughts?

Sure does. As long as your outside and having fun I beleive it is camping. We camp out behind our house sometimes. I usually call tarp or tent camping rough camping. I believe it is what level of camping you want.

i agree here. as long as you are outside, enjoying it, i dont think it matters what you bring with you. lol, 2 weeks ago my friend brought his 42" HDTV into the woods and plugged it in to his power inverter on his boat so he could watch the game on the river we were staying at!! i was amazed that he even got reception with the antenna he brought, but we watched the football game riverside!!!

I'm Thinking +3!!! As Long as you and yours are out in the Wilderness and enjoying yourselves, then how you camp is your business, have fun with it I say!!!

I agree, getting out there is enough, regardless of what "method" you use.  We take a lot more than we actually need, but I do it just so we can go....just another compromise to me.  If it means the difference between getting to go or staying, I'll pack my Suburban full till the doors won't shut!!! LOL

(Not sure if I'm doing the quote thing right or not)...But that right there is funny as all get out, I don't care who you are!!  Bet it tasted pretty good though...

I dated a gal once who had never been camping, and she hated bugs.  She spent the entire weekend sitting inside the tent with the bug screen zipped shut.  I handed her food through the zipper like a prison cell.  LMAO at the memories.  Long story short, she ended up with more knives and guns than I had over the years and got over her fear of bugs!!

Absolutely try again.  If you stop with only one experience, that's all they have to form an opinion and will never change.  If you can get them to give it 2-3 tries first, they will usually change their minds, especially if you have kids going along.

Mine likes to camp...she just likes to take extra "stuff" too.  Last time we went out...just the two of us, I had the rear seat out, the middle seat folded down, and could only see out the top half of the rear window!

I love camping.   All kinds.  I've done 3 week river trips through the Grand Canyon.  UL trips on the AT.  Minimalist survival stuff.  Love tent and hammock camping with my Tribe down here in FL.  I've got a slide-in camper on a 3/4 ton truck that's been from Key West to Alaska.  Just spent a week sleeping under a canvas tarp and a wool blanket by the fire at a 'vous.  Pigeon holing "real" camping as one thing or another is really kinda silly.  Some people get real worked up over it.  Bad for the blood pressure.

Camping to me is getting out in nature no matter what you sleep in: ground cloth, tent, camper, cabin.  The point is to get out and enjoy it.

It sure does...you might have a little bit more protection, but you are still enjoying the great outdoors....

In my opinion it does. Everything doesnt have to be "bushcraft" style.  Tarp, debris hut, tent, camper... Its all about doing what you enjoy, and it is camping

lol, well i cant promise i wont post something if i find an easier way to do something but yes, NO ONE here will look down on you if you dont sleep in a hammock, or use a tarp, or even if you dont camp at all!

right!! as long as the topics stay relatively on track, i see no reason to shut it down. and we wont hold hands here either, that means a thread wont get locked for a heated discussion either. if someone says some off the wall thing, they had better be prepared to defend the statement, cause im sure as hell not bailing them out.

I have a 22' camper trailer, a 9'x14' 3-room family tent, a 2 person mountain tent, a tarp, and a bedroll. All get used at various times, for various reasons.
Last time I looked, "camping" meant living away from your usual conveniences for a limited amount of time.
How long you camp, where you camp, and how much less than your normal refrigerator and flush toilet you take with you is inconsequential.

Ya camping is whatever you think it is. Roughing it is more relative than temperature I think depending on a persons comfort zone. When I was is college I lived in a cabin in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our only heat was two wood burning stoves and a fireplace. We chopped a lot of wood to stay warm. We had electricity but it was out as much as on in the winter due to snow taking out the lines. Most of out light was from the stoves, fireplaces, lanterns, and candles in the winter. Great light to study and read by I might add especially when it comes from many directions. To make a long story short, most of my college friends who came out asked how could I live this way? They thought it was more of camping. I miss those days and yearn to get back to the simple life in the way of living.
