Ok, decided to shift gears again and try a couple of different things.

First, I shaved up some mullein pith and stuffed it in my fire piston.

After many attempts, i did get a little smoke inside the cylinder when I cleared it with a stick, and you can see a tiny charred bit towards the bottom of the tinder cup. I'm not sure if this is charred mullein, or leftovers from the fire piston's last ember with charcloth. Still, no glowing ember.

I decided to try this ornamental grass growing in our rock garden. It's not indigenous, but I figured what the heck, let's give it a try since it's right here.

Still no luck. Though it did char pretty good after several cycles through the piston, it was probably doomed to fail since I didn't separate the fluff from the seeds. The seeds probably contained just enough moisture to prevent it from working. As you can see, the fluff got a pretty good char on it.

After this failed attempt, I took a full length mullein stalk and smoothed up the outside, and decided to try a hand drill since that was another method I have never attempted. I used a juniper hearth board. the mullein stalk is so much softer than the juniper that it was just grinding away and the end was only barely getting warm. For this to work I will need to find a much, much softer material for a hearth board. The dust formed wasn't even brown at all. I stopped just short of blister territory.

My latest poly piston build hit a snag and I had to redo the plunger. Built another mini model T while doing the poly. Both have epoxy set up or curing time now. Then finish putting together and pressure testing.

I kind of figured the pith would have problems in your piston since I have been there already with no joy also. The plant fluff even without the seeds usually just burns up rather than smoldering. I have tried cattail fluff in many different configurations in the piston with no joy. Ditto on the super dry decayed punkwood. Tried various dried shelf fungi, dried fluffy grass, fine wood shavings, and even dried rabbit dung (droppings). Nothing unprocessed has worked so far in any of my pistons, manufactured or homemade.

Yep, it looked like the fluff that did char got burned up entirely and the stuff in the bottom of the tinder cup was still white. Though i have successfully gotten an ember with cotton fluff scraped from my jeans after several cycles through the piston. as it chars, the material loses a lot of mass so you have to add more cotton after a few cycles. If you don't, there will be too much free space in the piston to get optimum compression. After adding a little more cotton it usually lights within a few cycles.

I had trouble using my flint and steel lighting anything found in nature.  I got stuff to light off of the firesteel but not the flint and steel.   :(

If your jean cotton fluff worked after charring and adding, then any cotton fluff should work. I will give it a try.

glad to see such a fertile discussion coming out a monthly project!
any one have any suggestions for hearth boards for mullein? I have a stalk that's been dry  for quite some time (maybe too dry?) that I've been meaning to try out.

While taking my dog out just now I noticed this stuff:

Some kind of tall grass.  I don't think it's any kind of pampas grass.  Anyway, sparked it with my ferro rod and WHOOSH!

It burned hot and fast.  I'll have to grab some more and build a fire some time this week.

You can actually use the base/widest part of the mullein as a hearth. Just split it. then use a spindle smaller than the part ya used for a hearth. BTW - The root part can also be used as a bearing block, if necessary, for a bow drill.

I may just have someone take pics or a video of me using mullein pith or milkweed ovum. I use the ovum most of the time, mullein pith is a bit harder as it should be sliced REAL thin. Or, crushedchopped into very small pieces & the spark thrown into a pile, like ya would strike into a tinderbox.
I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)

Grabbed some of that wispy grass seed stuff I mentioned a couple posts ago. Figured I'd do this one since I just made a new hobo stove.

Giving it some sparks:

This stuff takes a spark and just burns.

Success!

Had the fire going. Might as well brew some tea!

I need to get a magnifying glass, so I can do this month's (March 2013) project. We're starting to get some sun and nice weather here finally.
