Monthly Project - January 2013
« on: January 14, 2013, 03:48:06 PM »
This one is a simple project that can be as challenging as you want to make it.

Carve a wooden spoon.

Simple, right? The challenge, for folks who already know how to do this, is to do it without the tools you are familiar with. So for experienced carvers, you might try making a spoon with a tomahawk or axe. For those who have never carved a spoon before, use whatever hand tools you need to get the job done.

I apologize for taking so long to get this project posted.

I'll give this one a whirl next time I'm out in the woods.

The other part should be no crooked knives, only straight edged tools.

Nice!
I have always looked forward to these Monthly Projects. I am happy to see that they are continuing into this New Year, as I was kinda getting worried they were forgotten.

I make & use some kind of a wooden utensil almost every time I get out in the sticks. Sometimes it is just a simple stick I put meat on over the fire,& sometimes I make a wooden spoon, fork, or even an impromptu bent-stick grill, or cup/mug holder. A few that I've made, I have shown on outings in the past, but this time, I think I will try to do something I haven't done before, or use a tool I haven't used before...
just to "Push the envelope", a bit...Can't hurt, can it? Might discover something new.. eh?
 LOL

Good luck to all!  Looking forward to seeing all the different stuff, & some different methods that gets posted! I know that with all the "sharpies" I see here at B&B, & the experience that has been shown here at B&B before, there are gonna be some good examples of craftsmanship from many of the long time members!
:D

Doesn't seem like too tough a project for all of us who like to use our blades once in a while... Them blades are not just for, "lookin'at", are they?
LOL

Ok, just ordered a xacto wood carving kit. It was only a few bucks more than a mora spoon knife so I figured it would be worth it for all the interchangeable blades.

Thanks MnS, but I've never carved a spoon that looked like a spoon......most would pass for an emergency spatula or a tongue depressor :P  They work for scrambled eggs and stew, but it takes me hours to finish a bowl of soup  :-\

Ok, my X-acto carving kit showed up today.

I used this little round blade to hog out the inside of the spoon.

Then I used my BushPick for the rough shaping.

Still have a long way to go, but it is shaping up!  I had some pine 1X2 (non treated) lumber that I used because it is soft and this piece was uniform with no knots. I am going to have to hog out some more of the back part of the spoon so that I can give the handle a bit of "bend" to make it better for scooping from a bowl or container. But I am pretty happy with the progress for my first try. The local indigenous wood is a lot harder to carve and find a suitable piece so I took the easy route for my first try. :tent:

COOL 8). My X-ACTO kit from many moons past, never had a scorp blade in it......that would be just the ticket for spoons, I would think

Switched to the Mora Clipper for the finer shaping. The X-acto router blade broke on me.  >:(  I ordered more, but that was pretty lame having it break in the middle of my first carving project. I like the kit, but I will probably look into a more tough spoon knife. Hopefully mora makes one with a small radius.

Anyhow, here it is roughed out and ready for sandpaper. If you had to scoop soup with it as-is, it would work.

PW, this is your first try at this, and well, you have this habit of making us look bad. Stop it. :(

Also, my 'box of razors', while striking mortal fear into me, does not have that little 'scorping' blade in it. Is that the one that broke? So it didn't stand up?

Great spoon I'd say! I'm gonna do it with... um, a butter knife, while riding blindfolded across the Niagara gorge on a high wire bike.

:P

 ;)

I made one(crook knife) out of a sawzall blade a couple of years ago. It works, but,I am not impressed with my own "knife making skills". I have a "gouge" I can use, or a couple of turns around with a regular knife blade...like making a socket for hand/bow drill fire & then expanding it out to make a scoop/spoon if I need one.

Regardless... PW. Sad to see/read your xacto went to crap... :(

Good to see someone is actually making  a spoon though. Instead of just saying they are gonna do one.. hint... hint...LOL

Just "stirrin' the pot a bit...

  :stir:

Folks.. please don't get all bent up about it...

It's just  meant in "fun".. :D

Great for ya to, "Lead the way" , PW...

 :D

{ I'll be making my  "project" around the weekend. Work, & $$ comes first this time of year for me.. Gotta "make hay when the Sun shines"....

 Got a lil surprise for some of you though... as the one I am going to show here, will/should be, "Dual-purpose"... ;) }

Thanks guys!

KK, the little toll bit in the second pic is the one that broke. Xacto calls it a router, and they come in a pack assortment with other blades for a little over 6 bucks. I am going to really take it easy on the next one.

MnS, thanks for the links, will check them out.

Ok, I need to know what I am looking at on the lh vs, rh knives. It looks like the rh version is designed to be held in the right hand and pulled toward the body, correct?

That sounds right to me. I have the mora that cuts both ways. (If you're talking about spoon knives...)

The RH one is for holding the handle in the Right Hand,& the LH is for holding the handle in the Left hand.

 :)

Note:
The #180 has a single edge, which allows a longer bevel more suited to wood carving. The blade is a bit over 3", but only 2 1/8" is sharpened from the factory.

{As a sideline...for information purposes... if anyone cares to look. Here is a webpage that has a  little bit of info on crooked knife stuff to check out... }

I get the rh/lh abbreviations. :D

What I want to know is, when you are holding the knife in your right hand, are you making cuts toward or away from your body? In other words, I want to know what side the actual bevel is ground on so I know which knife to buy, since I might be more comfortable pushing than pulling and might want to use a lh knife right handed. ;)

Right hand pulls the knife with the right hand(handle in right hand, (blade down & handle up in hand/a stabbing,or dagger type hold) so the sharp side of the blade cuts/pulls towards the body. (scoops towards the body) The left hand is the opposite.
 :)

LOL I "think" I just said/typed that the right way.

I use my spoon knife in my right hand, generally pulling towards the thumb on my right hand. The bevel is on the bottom of the edge facing me, so I can cut towards my thumb and up.

(Am I getting what you're asking?)

I just saw your last, and I don't think cutting away from yourself would work very well, as your cut would be hidden behind your hand... Just seems awkward to me. YMMV

BTW. I believe,ifI can explain this correctly... the bevel of the knife on those Frosts are on the outside, which means that your angle of attack whencutting towards you, will be affected more  by the steepness of the angle as you tip the blade either away(shallow), or towards(deeper)you. Kinda like a chisel edge will cut deeper as the angle increases, & shallower as the angle decreases..
damn,I am not so good at these descriptions...

Thanks for the descriptions guys. I will just have to adjust my technique. There has to be a reason they do it that way and it is probably safer and more effective in the long run.

Meanwhile, I got done with the 120 grit sandpaper. I think I will call this one good.

Nice lookin spoon there , PW!     I gotta git on this one.. I've gotten a scorp knife so I should have no excuse to carve me up a spoon...and I want a short spatula too...

LOL W.W.~ In my case, even after carving a bunch of different simple wooden utensils over the years, & I do speak for myself here...For me, there seems to be a ratio of 1 spoon to 1 spatula/spork...
LOL

In other words, Many of my "intended to be" spoons, turn out to be spatulas or sporks, due to some mistake I make,or a bad turn in the wood, etc.. So, in my case,I am going to try to start out with a spoon & it make take several attempts before I actually get a spoon. :D I think it is due to the fact that most of the time I go to carve a spoon, it is because I "need" a spoon. So I get in a hurry. I rarely carry stuff with me, that I can make on the spot..Like utensils to eat with. So, I usually are carving utensils as I am watching the food get cooked that I need the utensils for... Then when done, they either go in the pack/pocket, or into the fire.. It depends...
 LOL
So, for this project, I am making one ahead of time & I think that takes a little pressure off of me.. Maybe I'll actually get a spoon on the first try this time, instead of a spatula or a spork.
 ;)

G'Luck with your spoon, & spatula!
 :D

Heh, thanks OE! Still I used really soft pine and that made it a lot easier than it might have been. And I used sandpaper too. No sandpaper in the sticks, so if it was just carved it would look a lot rougher.

I usually use a hatchet, knife and spoon knife for these so this was well outside my comfort zone but here it is in all its glory: spoon carved with only the C3 pass-around knife and baton. It's rough, mistakes were made, but it's a serviceable spoon that looks a lot like it would if I carved it in a real survival situation and with a minimum of blood-letting  :D

That's as far as I got in the woods, I decided to go home and sit somewhere semi-dry to finish it up:

notice the DAMN HOLE IN THE BOTTOM AAARRGGG...got a little overzealous wasting the bottom away. A little pine pitch would fix it right up.

Nice Binalith.  I like that you used the fixed blade just to see how it does.  Good practice.  Too bad about the hole but I like it, more than PW's for sure :)

Binalith,
As far as I see it, that is just Great!

 :D

& what you showed so far, is exactly how most of my "field-expedient" utensils look like... Made, "On the spot",  as the need arises...

Your spoon....I think it is Super!

It would do the job it was intended for just fine, wouldn't it.. That's the reason to make them, right?
:)

Pretty doesn't always mean that much if the need is there...Haha..
;)
I'm sure you know... you likely can see how a spoon can make its' way into a spoonula, spatula, or Spork, in short order, if conditions make it happen...LOL
 :)

As I said, "Great!".

 :D
I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)
