  Bearhunter!

I decided I better at least get some of the pics I have taken in here before I forget. So here are what I have so far. I will come back & add in the rest later, by edit.

I was going to use a peice of cherry wood that I picked up when I was out with Duke  a week or so ago. But, I decided to wait on that one til later. So I went out and grabbed another stick to use instead. I kinda put off this project a bit, a few days ago, due to being busy with work. I work with my hands & I am currently doing the finish trim on a house. So I am basically working with wood all day, & really not in the mood to do it in the evenings. I also had a mishap the other day & that slowed me up, as getting this finish trim-job done, is more important to me right now, to make some $$, than making a spoon. You will see at the end why I am going to finish the spoon today, since I only have a half day of work, rather than finishing the spoon last weekend. Here are the pics up til now:

Tools used: Saw to cut branch off(not shown), for carving,an Opinel #8 folding carbon knife, and a Frosts Mora Hook knife:

Duke was along with me out and about, & it was raining & sleeting. So we had been under a shelter, with me carving & him "keeping watch".

I was carving away, and after a time, Duke suddenly growled, sprang up & dashed off. It seems a deer had decided to get within our/actually his "perimeter", & Duke wasn't having any of that. The only problem was when he growled & sprang up next to me, as I was carving, he startled me enough that I cut my hand. I didn't feel it as so much as saw the cutafter Duke had returned, since I had turned to look/see why he growled & got up, and my hands were cold from not wearing gloves. Also, since this is the hand I got bit/broken finger, I still have nerve damage & cramping in it. So, it is not unusual that I didn't feel the slice right away. But after I called Duke back & he returned from the line of our/actually his "perimeter", and running off the intruder. LOL I saw the blood dripping. So I got a tissue out of my pocket, took  a look, & since it wasn't that deep, I carved a bit more, dabbing at the blood occasionally, till my hand cramped up. Then I got a band aid on it, & went home... In the pic the slice is actually across the first (index) knuckle, and hard to see, but the blood pooled a bit when I was taking the pic. The hook/crooked knife was sharp. ;)

So, that is as far as I got last weekend. On my way home from there, I got to thinking that I prolly ought to hold off a bit on the spoon, & concentrate on making my living without any more injury, as I need the $$ more than the spoon. a worse cut could have kept me from working. So... I waited until I would have the time to spare, & the job was about finished. Like today...
 ;)
I will add the final pics later, if I remember. LOL The spoon is almost finished anyway. It is nothing fancy or pretty, just utilitarian, like most stuff I make to use. The fork on the handle end was to be another tool for food prep, but I may not get that done in time, so I may just cut off that end & just show the spoon. :-\  Not sure yet.
But I will have the spoon done for sure today.
 :D

Hey folks, here's my feeble attempt at spoon carving
It's my first attempt and anyone who has worked with Purple Heart wood knows how hard it is. I should've listened to Wolfy had used a local softwood like Larch or Fir (my mom always told me to listen to my elders ;) )
It's not totally done... I haven't put the 'finishing touches' on it, but I'll do that soon.
I was going to finish it up this morning, but something unexpected came up and I have to run into town, so I wanted to make sure that I got the pics up before I get back later today.

Please be kind... At least I tried and hey. It kinda looks like a spoon ;D

Thanks for looking and have a good day :D

Was gonna "edit" the last post, but I think it would be easier to just make a new post. More pics, easier to load...I think.. LOL
I decided to show the "tool"  that I mentioned in the earlier post, I was talking about maybe not showing it & cutting it off. I had the time, & although it did not end up just the way I wanted it to be... It still works, & shows , for the most part, what I was trying to demonstrate.
It is at the very end.
 :)
I also put some things in the pics for scale; some things that I do not talk much about much. But, I thought they would be a good addition for folks to look at, even though the pics are "crappy" phone pics. They are just a few of the "snake killers" that I have, that are handy to have around, if ya have to deal with snakes. No matter how many "legs", them "snakes" have... LOL  ;) {I limited the amount of pics. Otherwise I would be taking up way too much "bandwidth". Besides... No reason to show all the "cards", is there? ;) LOL }

Here are the pics (limited narration.. for once, eh? ;) :
.22cal. rounds in the spoon part.

.44Mag round in the spoon part

9mm . a round & a "hull", for scale, in the spoon:

Another "plinker"  for scale(.22 cal. / no rounds in the spoon):

A "hide-out" for scale( .38 Spec./ no rounds in the spoon):

Spoon end with my finger in thes poon part:

The "tool" end:

The whole utensil:

OK.... Here is the pic for what the "tool" end is for..... ;) :

My spoon ain't pretty, but it is a spoon, not a Spoonula, Spatula, Spork, or fork... This time anyway...LOL ;) It is "utilitarian", as I usually make things for using out in the sticks out ofa"need", rather than a item to"carry",, & this one has a useful "tool" on the other end for when I heat up stuff in a tin/soup can.. Which, as frugal as I am...Is often enough... ;)

I had fun making this project, even with the "slice" I got. I'll use this utensil a couple of times & then it is likely I will just throw it in the fire one day & burn it. I can always make another, or something like it, when I need it.
 :)

Hope ya enjoyed the "view". It was fun for me to do this, & maybe share a bit.
 ;)

Great Monthly Project to do, & I enjoyed seeing all of the other spoons that were made. Hope to see more folks doing the next, February Monthly Project...
 :D
They are fun & keep ya busy!

Thnx zammer! The lil slice is just fine, & "no sweat".  Not the first time, & likely not the last.
 :)

Looks just fine, & a useable spoon to me. You did the project, & let us see the pics. Participation is the key. ;)

Hi, all. I'm new to the forum and a day late for this challenge.  I've been looking at these monthly challenges for a little while now and decided to finally jump in for this one.  I'll probably go back and try to complete all the previous ones, too.  Really great idea whoever came up with these, by the way.

Not sure what the wood is. I took these pieces out of a rotting log that was sitting in my back yard. Don't remember where it came from. Shaped it with my hatchet and folding saw and went to work with my mora. I don't have a spoon knife yet but I made use of a speedball gouge that I had. It's not made for wood at all (it's for making linoleum prints), but with repeated sharpenings it did the job.

Anyway, my first spoons:

Thanks, everybody.  A very warm welcome indeed!

wolfy: I'm in St Louis, MO. Not too far from NE. Anyone here from my neck of the woods?

BigHat: The barrel's in the works, but it might take a while.  ;D

Anyone have any suggestions for staining the spoons once I finish 'em? I was thinking a coffee or tea stain and then some mineral oil. I've never done it before.
