When the shop keeper doesn't have enough interest to stop in for a few minutes every couple of days it doesn't bode well for the future of the shop.

  Just saying.   ???

With an attitude like that, I think your new forum name is more apropos than your previous one.  Just accept it for now.....the forum name 'Moe' brings back memories of the 3 Stooges, anyway.

PW may be under the weather, away on a trip or

He'll fix the problem when he gets back. :coffee:

LOL,  that's not what I meant,  my problem will get resolved or it won't,  in itself that's no big deal,  I still have use of the forum, and though I'd like my identity back,  I can live without it here.
What I said was meant in a general sense,  IMHO we don't need a moderator to keep us in line, we do a pretty good job of policing our own,  but we do need the administration to be on top of problems that might pop up about forum security, to answer technical questions (like how do I change the Font format) about the forum, and to make changes when necessary, I'm assuming that's what happened to Red,  he appeared to loose interest, didn't log in for long stretches,  and then was gone, if Ron fades away,  where does that leave the forum,  just saying.   ???
I can well understand that sometimes life gets in the way and priorities come first,  I also understand that Ron has had his share of surprises and upsets to deal with,  again in my opinion, if the job is too demanding at times then appointing a moderator to take the pressure off would seem reasonable.

* BTW, Grumpy refers to my user name,  not necessarily my general disposition.   :)
Plus, creating a new me got me back the use of emoticons and spell checking (which for some unknown reason was lost a couple of years ago),  so it wasn't a total disaster.

PW has some work conflicts as I recall but he used to post once in awhile.  Now nothing.  Maybe under the weather or some outside issues but it sure would be nice to hear from him.

Sorry for the lapse in attention.  I feel an obligation to you guys who have remained steadfast members in the course of this forum's ebb and flow over the years.  We are closing in on a decade!  But a lot changes in ten years.  I have 2 kids instead of one now, and it seems like less time to pursue my own interests than ever before.

I would like to delegate someone to be a mod, but I also worry a bit about giving someone a hammer.  (They might go in search of nails to pound down.)  I also wouldn't mind passing the torch to someone else who could spend the time to try to grow the forum back to where we were getting 3 or 4 new members a day.

If I had "all the time in the world" what I would do is convert this over to a modern forum software.  Find a company that could retain all the data and the forum structure and appearance, and just move everything over to a more user friendly format.

But we are talking lots of big changes, testing and bug fixes and all that.  It's too big of an undertaking for me at this point in my life.  But at the same time, you guys deserve a more attentive admin than I have been lately.

I also perhaps need to learn to let go.  If I do find someone to take the reins, I will have to do so with the understanding that they will have a different vision for the forum, and it might go in some directions I wouldn't choose.  I have a few ideas about how all of that could happen but even transferring the forum over to someone else comes with a good bit of an investment in time.  You have to change payment methods for the hosting service and the domain registration has to be changed over as well. So probably a good bit of time on the phone to get it all sorted out.

Anyhow, just thinking out loud here.  I am not in too big of a hurry to make sweeping changes but it is on my mind.

@ PetrifiedWood, not interested in moderation role, but I could help out with running the forum for free on my server.
I used to host several forums in the past (all taken over by facebook), so forum software is not a stranger to me.
These days I host only a couple of blogs/websites for others and my own blog.
A few things to consider:
- I'm daily online due to work anyway so in case of software/spam issue's I can respond fast
- Zero costs as I'm happy to help out.
- Admin rights needed for forum maintenance only.
- Moderation of users needs to be done by someone else.
- Server is not located in the US, this might be in mental issue for some people though..

When in doubt about the speeds and connectivity, check out my blog: www.dabberty.com and check some pages with pictures, those are all located on my server.
The speed of the youtube video's I cant control since this is at youtube.
If you can connect quickly to that, then the speeds for the forum will be fine as well.

Let me know if this sounds interesting.

I go to Dabberty's blog a few times a month to see what he has added.  It is a good blog and I notice no issues with it.

My greatest fear was/is that PW would just eventually have to give up on keeping the forum running.  I certainly understand the periods of unintentional absence....TWO kids, a wife, a job, other hobbies, sharing time with friends, etc.

Babysitting a forum full of misfits is no small task!  Kudos to Dabberty for offering his expertise & experience as a possible path to the forum's continuity!

I hang here most of the time because we are a small group with core members that are familiar with one another.  We kid each other and don't have to worry about people getting their noses out of joint, share experiences and skills, etc.....we need a leader that is familiar with our quirky behavior and will 'go with the flow'.....not someone that intends to change all of that and rule with an iron fist!

I keep the forum on WHO'S ONLINE when I'm not here and just hit 'refresh' when I come back.  It's always amazing to me to see how many 'guests' are searching OLD threads in search of information.  This little forum is packed with excellent information in the archives.  Most of them are still valuable for their guidance to others that come here in search of it.....and it shows by the number of 'guests' that are always here, 24/7.  Usually 1, 2 or sometimes 3 pages full of them.  It's interesting to note which threads are visited most frequently by these searchers....this thread, with 5 pages & nearly 98,000 hits so far, being one of them.  It has evolved from a joke to a pissin' match with an Aussie, to more wisecracking and, eventually to the serious situation we now find ourselves in.  The point of that being, the ARCHIVES are probably our most valuable asset at this point.  That is not to say that we are no longer adding valuable content or discussing 'bushlore' at the present time.....the airgun discussion being one where I have learned a whole bunch more than I thought I knew a few weeks ago. :P

i ain't near smart enough to handle running a forum like this.......and I notice that nobody has suggested that I could or should!    There ARE several of our present members that I think could, however.  Available time to do so, is most likely the biggest deterrent to most people who would otherwise volunteer to take the reins.  Who knows?    Let's keep the possibilities and nominations alive for the good of all concerned....I think it's worth the effort! :coffee:

Well, he sent me a PM before he split, but I couldn't respond soon enough before he did.  Missed him by 10 minutes, so I don't know if he will check back in to see my PM to him or not.  He may have appeared to be just a grumpy old fart to many of us, but to me he seemed like a knowledgeable bushman that posted some very useful information.

It is rather bothersome on forums when somebody comes back and starts deleting posts.  It is rather rude in that it really disrupts the flow of conversations.  Honestly, once something is posted it really is part of the forum and everybody's information.  Wish everybody viewed it as such.

Once again. Comment might be here, or not. Might stop in again, might not.
Might even remove or not. have to see...

( ^ That might depend on whether or not I get banned after this comment. I am just gonna tell it like I see it & if ya can't handle it, then do as ya like. I ain't scared. Maybe it is about time that someone told others the truth & see if it gets thrown out... )

Anyway, I am of tired of the crap, seeing folks do some things & then are hypocritical about it because they think it is OK for them, but not for others for some reason that only they seem to know about...but I will try to be good enough to say what I say  & let the chips fall where they do & not worry too much about it any more. If I go away again so be it. If I get to stay , so be that too.)

Now, for some explanation for some who I think ought to know more & also for some who should know better about some things, but apparently don't...

For those who want to know....

My first comment here in about 3 or so years, #212 if ya want to go look,
( It is still "empty") was complimentary about this forum and was to tell folks that I thought this place was a "Gem" in all of the internet forums about woodcraft, for its' actual content about "Blades" & "Bushlore"( "Bushcraft" & the hell with those a-holes) & that there was a wealth of info in the older, "archive" topics & there were comments & posts that are extremely informative that should not be over looked by the folks that do visit here, and it is still around to be accessed thru "archives", IF someone takes the time to do so.

As well as for folks coming here to take the time & look for such info by exploring the times when this forum was a lot more active than it is now.
Perhaps motivating them to get active & share what they can to improve B&B for others as well.

Next:

The 2nd post (#214) I removed was thanking Wolfy for his reply to that first post, and perhaps I would stop in more, but NOT comment much, but just have a look-see on occasion. ( I told MOE M. something similar around that time in a PM, but also told Moe that I was not too happy seeing some of the anti conservative political crap being talked about, as it did not seem to fit in much with this type of forum & the topics one would expect here.)

Next was:

Post #221, that I removed, was an observation that , even after all this time, I saw someone who is supposed to be close to 60 years old, (or I thought was about that age), that, (IMO, of course), is still being the same self centered/narcissistic, (attention seeking for attentions sake), & acting similar to a childish/ immature person, as well as not recognizing being hypocritical in what they are doing/saying, who, at what I thought was their age, ought to know better than to post such comments.

( From a "Global Moderator" no less, in a topic about "moderation"... Geeez.. Ridiculous to see...)

What I read in the posts I saw was a, "Nah nah nah, I have a secret & I am not telling", grade school nonsense & SOMEONE ought to be calling the person out for that sort of kid game BS.

( I DID say something, but removed it in that post #221 in trying to be polite & civil about it & even after trying to be polite & civil, then see a post where I still got some sort of a complaint by that same person about taking away from the gist of the topic by my removal of those observations, & at the same time, the "Kid who apparently never grew out of that childish crap", is trying to play the, "Ive got a secret & not telling" BS kid game & complaining I removed/deleted" comments/posts.

Gimme a damn break.. That is asinine...   As well as hypocritical, for doing just the same thing in the topic about supposedly knowing who a Moderator was going to be, but not telling anything about that supposed information. Talk about interrupting the flow from the course of the topic~~!!

It is/was just as much of a "Hijack" as some one removing comments/post, IF folks actually paid attention...

Plain old hypocritical BS, but no one said a thing...

Until post #221,since removed,  or NOW~!

Next...

Post # 222 was  was just a comment that while I thought things would have become much better since I last logged in to B&B , but that I was not likely to remain as since it appears that the same people are saying the same things & acting the way they did/do, then it was a waste of my time to stop in.

Now... After all of that explanation for folks to understand WHY I removed the posts I did...

This post is, to explain to folks that asked, like WDStan, who wondered,  "Why I stopped in & then removed my posts", as well as to once again inform some folks that I think that those same folks,
who ought to know better, just are not able to accept that  there are those who recognize their particular sort of BS & just don't want to hang around & keep seeing that same old, same old, crap.

The expectations being from some of us who were here from the beginning, that eventually, the folks who are a PITA here in this forum, will either change or be gone. The need for "Moderation" was taken care of by the rest of the folks here & the forum really did not need too much "Moderation" from anyone, so the folks that needed "moderation" would be taken care of or adapt & learn to "get along".

Well, jusdging from my short time of recisiting here, it looks like that did not happen here, since the topic of finding another person to "moderate" is currently going on in this topic.

Well, it is too bad it was not taken care of by "peer pressure " to get folks to self correct & not require any more "moderation" than that
I'd bet I am not the only one to feel the way I just mentioned. Some folks have not yet returned & if things are going to remain the same here, then they likely will not return either. ( <Think about that for just a second... Why do folks not return when they can? Something stops them... Could it be that things are still crappy to them & they just don't see a good reason?
One more thing to ask is, "other than PW needing a bit of assistance in being around to take care of moderation, why , after 10 years, IS THERE A NEED for more moderation?  Hmmm...))

{An old saying comes to my mind... "Crap in your watering hole & no one wants to drink there."
I still see the same old "crapping in the watering hole", so I am wise enough not to drink.". BTW, Some are not & are still crapping here....}

So, now ya'll got an answer about my "removed/deleted" comments/posts in this topic, and I will likely keep looking for some sort of mature, common sense responses to anything I might post here in this topic or even in this forum, If I ever do again.
As well as looking for actual topics & comments about things that are of importance & might even be good info about the whole reasons that Blades & Bushlore(Bushcraft) was started in the first place, instead of some of the other crap I noticed were being discussed for no good reason but for folks to whine & about current events & the particular political postion they chose to place themselves..

Perhaps I will visit again & perhaps not. Time will tell & if I find out that if there is some Ban Hammer that was forged since I was last here, I may not get the chance.

Take it or leave it, you got "MY" opinion & explanation for the removed comments/posts & I do not expect to repeat it. Read is now because it may not remain & be removed/deleted like the others.

BTW. IF by chance ya can't handle what I posted here, I would suggest ya just keep it to yourself, or share among your friends, if ya have any, as it will likely be a waste of time to even try to type it out if ya expect me to pay any attention to any more whining & other BS from some of ya...

I just don't give a damn about a few of you folks for your BS & you likely feel the same way about me & my opinions.

That is about as polite & civil a way I can think of to say, "Bless your heart." to a few of ya without getting more descriptive about where I think ya ought to shove your sconce.

Cya.
Bye.

I love being out in the woods!   I like this quote from Mors Kochanski - "The more you know, the less you carry". I believe in the same creed, & think  "Knowledge & honed skills" are the best things to carry with ya when you're out in the wilds. They're the ultimate "ultralight" gear! ;)

I still see the same old "crapping in the watering hole", so I am wise enough not to drink.". BTW, Some are not & are still crapping here....}

Cya.
Bye.

Figured I'd quote this so it hangs around regardless of future actions to delete or not.  Seems that my joking aroung about being the new Mod has put your panties in a wad.  My apologies if that is the case or my apologies if I misunderstood your comments.

My comments to Craig were really in jest.  It is plainly evident by every post I make now that Ron has changed my status.  Not sure why that would cause any consternation, but if I have given anybody reason for that - again - my apologies.

As to keeping things to myself because somebody may not be interested.....well, I'll just leave it at OK - whatever floats your boat.

Well I don't think you owe an apology to a guy who hasn't been on the forum for a few years and then posts what he just did.  If he wants to be part of this forum that is fine but if he is offended by our conversations and observations then he ought to ignore this place.

Sometimes it's good to be older than dirt,  when threads get so complicated that they defy understanding you can always blame your confusion on senility,  I lost track of where this thread it's headed a while back, just so there's no mistake, I'm referring to my confusion and my senility.
Now, back to our regular programing.
