Monthly Project - February 2013
« on: January 31, 2013, 03:38:27 PM »
For the February project, we are going to build a fire fork out of a wire coat hanger.

You will need a wire coat hanger, a pair of pliers that can bend and cut wire, a reasonably long stick, and a piece of sandpaper.

First, you will need to cut the twisted portion of the coat hanger off using your pliers.

Then straighten the coat hanger, being careful not to snap it off where the bends are sharp. While it is straight, sand off the lacquer with sandpaper. You don't want that in your food.

Bend the wire around your stick about three inches from the end. You want a slight taper carved on the end. This will allow the loop to pass easily over the end and sit snug on the stick.

Your wire should now have a loop in the center just like this:

On either side of the loop, bend the wire up at a right angle.

Next, bend one of the wires across, again at a right angle. Make sure you make the bend close enough to the first loop so that bend doesn't end up farther than the end of the stick.

Next, place the wire on the stick as shown, and wrap the wire around the stick 1/2 turn so it is now pointing the other direction. Make sure it is close to the 90 degree bend like in the picture. This will allow the wire to "spring" together to clamp to the stick after you make the bend for the other side.

Now we bend the other side at 90 degrees. You want to make this bend slightly farther up the wire so that the two half loops sit one on top of the other.

Put the wire back on the stick, and bend another half loop in the other side. By squeezing the sides together before making the bend, you will ensure there is some spring tension to hold it to the stick.

Finish by bending the two long ends up to point away from the stick.

When it is removed, you can see how the two half loops spring apart. This is how it stays attached to the stick.

Good luck! :)

I don't think they are even patented Wolfy, but if anyone is worried you would need to profit from them in order to infringe. So as long as you aren't making and selling a bunch of patented items it should be ok.

But mostly I just posted to bump this to the top. :D

The goal is to make a removable fork out of wire that can be added to a stick in camp and then removed when your outing is over. If you have a different way to achieve that then that would be ok too. :)

Good project ,PW!

I plan to make one like this, "mucho-pronto. Although,I have a modification that I use for this type of thing. I will add it to my "project", to show it. Unless someone else shows it first. Having a metal clothes hanger,  or 2, or the same gauge wire, ( like horse fence/12 , or 14 Ga. wire, I think), is a handy item to have in your main pack. Even a couple of feet of it. Lightweight, coils up nicely although a bit stiff, & stows away so ya wouldn't even know it was there , unless ya knew it... Lots of things you can make that is quick,  not easily available , or reusable, like things you have to make out of natural materials ya get in the wilds. :)

I hope I can get this one done quickly....I was almost late for the last one.

Here is the way I did it, since I have made a few of these over the years & this is the style I make. Not the sameaswhat PW shows, but it is what I wanted to do & show. :)
Total time..maybe 10 minutes... Of course.. It is not "pretty", but works just fine. My "mod" is that I bend the holding "prongs", in slight angles, to help hold things that you are trying to hold over the heat of the fire, from falling off the prongs. Straight ones have given me troubles over the years, when food I wanted to cook , ended up in the coals, or in the fire, & got a lil more direct heat & that charcoal flavor a bit more than I intended... ;) So the lil bends in the "prong" ends help things from sliding off.. or...at least they help slow anything from dropping off, most of the time..
 ;)

Here's the pics:

It will find a home in our "over the cab", P/U truck camper & when I go to use it I will do a lil sanding to remove the coating off the wire, before I, or anyone else uses it for any foods.
;)

Fun Project!
:D

Must be too tough a project,eh?

Expensive... takes a whole wire clothes hanger..or a chunk of stiff wire of some kind...

Lots of tools needed too..... Maybe cut the wire with yur leatherman or multi tool.. No one must own one of them, eh?

Bending the wire around a broom handle... No one has them brooms around anymore,eh? Can't find a stick any where either.. Tuff stuff for people who bushcraft, eh?

Speaking of bending a coat hanger wire... Maybe folks are doing chin ups, push ups & lifting weights to get in shape to be able to bend the wire, eh?

Geeeez, P.W.- Maybe ya chose "too difficult" a project?
 :-\

I dunno. It could be the sub-forum location of the monthly projects makes them harder to find. Or maybe it's too cold for folks to get out and roast hot dogs and marshmallows.

But these aren't a requirement, just fun projects. If a person doesn't think it would be fun to do one then no big deal. :)

A quick project! I did this one while waiting for my wife. 8)  Although I might've cut the prongs a hair short... :P

Well done diogenes! Looks great, better than mine does!

The prong length isn't so critical. They are intended to use both prongs piercing the side of a hot dog, rather than two hot dogs drooping off the ends of both prongs. ;)

And, for the record, yours is way better done than mine.  I rushed a bit. (I've got the knicks and cuts to prove it!)  I can tell you took your time with yours. It shows in the quality of work. :D

Nice one, Diogenes!

How long to make? 10-15 minutes? Not too hard to do & a person could make a few for the whole family, or even get the family involved in making them. I thought it was a great project to do with kids, anyway...
:D

Doesn't take that long, does it...
:)
The ones you fellers are making look a whole lot nicer than the one I made, but I only used my leatherman cutting the wire, and on the prong kinks, as you can see. Bent the rest with my hands. Seems to me a person could do this while they are sitting & watching TV, if they wanted. Something to work on during the commercials anyway. I don't watch TV much, so I made mine while waiting for a pheasant noodle casserole to cook in the oven. Prolly could have made 3 in the time it took to bake it.
;)

Hope to see some more here. Even gnarly looking bent ones like mine.. Even if it is ugly, it still works...LOL

Did you bend the tips of the prongs outward on purpose? Because that's what they do with the commercial ones. Probably helps hold the dog on kind of like MnSportsman's version. I might have to do that on mine. Either way, nice work!

:)   One was already curled outwards from the top of the hanger shape.  I just bent the other to match.   I did think about doing more like MnSports..but man that wire was hard for me to bend with my pliers so I just did the ends.

Hmmm. Less than a week left for this one.
hint hint..
;)

I thought there was more folks interested in doing these lil projects.

Well, I will keep doing them as long as they get posted up. I think they are kind of fun, & certainly fairly easy to do. Not too expensive either. Rather do something like these projects than watch the "tube", that is for sure.
:)

I do prefer the ones that ya have to do outside, but these ones that you can do inside or outside, are just the "ticket" for those who can't get out when they want. This months project is good for something to do and get the whole family involved.
Not all of the projects lend themselves to possibly being a group project.
Hope to hear about,or see some more of these soon.
