10 ton Meteor bangs Russia
« on: February 15, 2013, 05:22:17 AM »
Holy Moly!  10 tons moving at 33,000 mph does alot of damage even if it doesn't actually hit the earth intact.

The way I've always understood it was that there would be some warning before the planet is actually hit by something like that. Was this too small for the "radar" or did some astronomers know about it before hand?
Either way, that would be pretty damn scary.

There are quite a few vids of it that were caught on russian dash-cams, pretty intense fireball streaking across the sky on a bright blue day also had some amazing sonic booms...

first vid is sonic booms...http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=b70_1360910617

fireball while driving...http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=bc6_1360906509

More content!

Just a normal, flirty day at the office when the cosmos decided to teach them a lesson on laziness in the workplace.

Apparently it hit this zinc plant (which is oddly... convenient? I mean, if the meteor has any zinc in it anyway...)

While I'm sad that many people where hurt and some maybe even killed, I really find this whole thing fascinating. I mean, a huge freakin' rock from outerspace slams into the planet. It'd ne really cool if you could remove the human aspect of the incident.

I've heard it wasn't actually hit, but that the shockwave did the damage to the zinc plant...don't know how true that is buts its kinda scary to think a shockwave can cause that kinda damage from such a small object.

And yes, I believe all Russian vehicles come standard with a dash-cam these days Rog...they are easily the dash-cam capitol of the world... 8)

A big enough hit could certainly remove any human aspect from the incident, just ask any dinosaur.  >:D

The asteroid DA14 will pass within 17,000 miles of the Earth at approximately 11:25 PST today. The path of the asteroid will be inside the geosynchronous orbit of several satellites.

The what just blew up above Russia was a small meteor. In 1908, above Tungusta, Russia, a bigger one leveled thousands of acres of timber. Took many years to figure what the explosion was all about.

DA14 is a full-fledged asteroid with an orbit around our sun. One of the comments I heard was that an impact with it would be equivalent to 50 Hiroshima A-bombs.

The other amazing fact is that (the last I heard) the number of astronomers actively engaged in tracking/finding NEOs (Near Earth Objects) would barely man you average McDonald's 24/7.  "Early warning" is dicey, at best.  DA14 was discovered only last December.

Just for chuckles, here is a picture of the crater left by the fragment of this recent meteor in Russia.
The last remnant crashed into a frozen lake.

Compare that to Meteor Crater in Arizona. One that size would do more than break a few windows.

Like it or not, we are in the middle of a Cosmic Shooting Gallery. It's amazing we haven't been toasted already.

Thanks for the cheery story about the early warning OP. I'll sleep better at night now.
Of course...Would you even want to know if an asteroid that would destroy the life on the planet was heading our way?

Honestly, no. Like the guy said about nuke weapons, the best place to be is Ground Zero.

The asteroid Apophis will pass uncomfortably close to us in 2036. Originally, there was a 1:5,000 chance it would impact with Earth. Now they are recalculation the odds at 1 in 11 Million. That's all well and good, but when it first was discovered in 2004, it was spotted in June, and was at its closest approach to us in December. This thing is 325 meters across. Had it been on a collision course at that time, we would have had 6 months warning.

That might be a subject for a new thread. What would you do if you knew a Near Extinction Event was coming in 6 months?

Initially, the commentary on Apophis was contradictory. It was stated that unknown impacts with other object during its orbit could deflect it, as well as gravitational influences along its path. So now 'they' have recalculated its orbit and reduced the risk based upon current telemetry. It's changed from its original orbit...and might change again.
BTW, there are 5 other NEOs that pose a greater risk than Apophis.

Info on NEOs is available on the NASA and JPL websites.

Near Extinction Event in six months?  Empty the bank accounts.  Load the Slide-in camper.  Tour North America one more time.  And spend the last month secluded with family and friends.  Eating all kinds of fatty sugary food.

Not kidding.  ;)

The asteroid Apophis...
Oh man. I saw a show on Apophis a while back. I just remember hear that Apothis was the Egyptian god of death and destruction or something. I though, "Why would anyone name an asteroid that is headed for earth that!?!" If I remember correctly they said it wouldn't destroy the planet but a direct impact would kill millions and severely screw up your weekends for a while.

One bit of good news I got from that NASA-TV feed is that the number of NEO observatories has increased dramatically over the past 5 years. Lots of people looking now, and most of them are dedicated amateurs linked to the JPL data center.  Good news, I guess.

Yeah, kinda, sorta... What do you do to protect yourself from this threat?  If you survive a minor event and have prepped... OK. But the Big Kahuna?  Ground zero for me.

Murphy's law number 56.  If you empty your bank account and eat all kinds of fatty sugary food the NEO will miss and you will be broke and fat.

You do have to feel for them .. they are in deep winter and have all their windows blown out.   CNN said for 100's of miles this sonic boom did damage to windows.

I've been thinking on that scenerio for me here.. I really dont know where I'd go for warmth.

You wouldn't have to go anywhere WW, corrugated cardboard would work fine for the short term, that and some clear packaging tape ( to help with weather-proofing ) until the window (s) could get fixed....it's a zammer approved short term cold fix....unfortunatel y not hurricane approved...lol

These sort of things can/do/will occur with no warning, the analogy is that there are more people employed at the average fast food restaurant than are actively engaged in scanning the sky for Earth Crossing asteroids. There was a very large, about 1/2 the size of a football field rock that passed by yesterday, it was inside the orbit of some of the communication satellites.  This asteroid was scheduled to fly by was being watched and considered the only thing out there that was even close.  The one that touched down in Russia, was a real surprise to everyone.

The strike yesterday is considered to be the biggest "thing" since the Tunguska event in 1908.  As I have mentioned before it is not if it is when,  there is another five mile piece of "rock" out there with our name on it, much like the strike in Yucatan, 65 million years ago that destroyed 90+% of life on the planet.

The velocities at which these things travel is such that even if they just pass through the upper atmosphere, without striking the ground, the sonic boom can be devastating.

Anyway a happy day after St. Valentines day to one and all.. !

I have a pretty large piece of forest to attend to, and it tends to per-occupy me, I have been looking for wolves of late.. and no matter what their status is, they had better not get anywhere near my horses .. extinction is not forever, but it is for a long time..

Which brings to mind:   They have recently found living Saber Tooth Tigers  in the jungles of SE Aisa...  And I suspect that they probably cloned that Mammoth calf they found in the ice in Siberia..

Bottom line ..  I like wolves as long as they stay away from my horses...

Hope you have been well .. I am on the down slope to spring it is almost 60 here today at the 3600 ft level of the Blue Mtns.   I know that at any time I will find new bear tracks in the melting snow... the real harbinger of spring  .. John

I've thought of that too Zammer.. cardboard and tape, but I've learned at single digit temps alot of tape is not dependable.  Staple gun would probably work.   But it will be cold in here with the winds we've been having.
