Thanks for the cheery story about the early warning OP. I'll sleep better at night now.
Of course...Would you even want to know if an asteroid that would destroy the life on the planet was heading our way?
Honestly, no. Like the guy said about nuke weapons, the best place to be is Ground Zero.
The asteroid Apophis will pass uncomfortably close to us in 2036. Originally, there was a 1:5,000 chance it would impact with Earth. Now they are recalculation the odds at 1 in 11 Million. That's all well and good, but when it first was discovered in 2004, it was spotted in June, and was at its closest approach to us in December. This thing is 325 meters across. Had it been on a collision course at that time, we would have had 6 months warning.
That might be a subject for a new thread. What would you do if you knew a Near Extinction Event was coming in 6 months?
Initially, the commentary on Apophis was contradictory. It was stated that unknown impacts with other object during its orbit could deflect it, as well as gravitational influences along its path. So now 'they' have recalculated its orbit and reduced the risk based upon current telemetry. It's changed from its original orbit...and might change again.
BTW, there are 5 other NEOs that pose a greater risk than Apophis.
Info on NEOs is available on the NASA and JPL websites.
