If anything else drill out the cork to make a floating sleeve/cover for the ferro rod.

Ohhh man.. I got a killer idea for a spark stick now to include a cork.

I once did a project from an article about tinder boxes.  Mine was more of a tube,  As shown below:

Now make that a bit less deep, put PJB or some other tinder in the tube, and fit a ferro rod to the other end.  Add a few pieces of fat wood to the lanyard, and  you got a snazzy fit kit.
..just saying.

Here is one I made last year with some desert ironwood and a copper lanyard tube.

Just banged this one out real quick. I had a piece of scrap brass that already had a 1/4" hole in it, but I didn't leave enough room for a lanyard hole. This one is just supposed to ride in my pocket anyway.

The antler tube is a pretty neat bit of kit and with the addition of a Ferro Rod makes it an ingenious idea JTD!  way to think out side the box man!        Two thumbs up!

Thanks man, but I didn't come up with it.  I read an article about antler boxes in The Backwoodsman Magizine.
Sadly I can't find that rag anywhere around where I live now..  :'(

Heres a lil firesteel/whistle I made for my son using deer antler for the handle. I also used leather dye to give it some color and accent the cross.

That's a heckuva good idea......in a real emergency you could scrape a little 'spark-catching' dust off the handle with your knife to start your tinder on fire.  Excellent!

Indeed, it's like the "bushy" version of a mag bar. Tinder and sparks in one.
