Fingers crossed, my severe winter weather alert is in effect until tomorrow afternoon.  So far not too bad, at 2AM, I had 4" on the ground, there was not a breath of air moving, and the moon was out, very nice.  When I went out to give the gang their breakfast, it had warmed up and rained sometime between 2 and 6:30AM, and I had 2" of slush.  Lots of deer tracks, one new set of coyote tracks and lots of stirred up places where the horses were playing in the snow.

I thought the same thing about my snow blower,  The first year I had it, there was already 18" of snow on the ground.  New toy, got to go blow snow.. It was a most of the day job, my drive way is 1/4 mile long, got done it looked good and two days later, it went to 50 deg., and rained for the next two days, could have saved myself some exercise.

Last winter, big snow fall, ran the snow blower, big job, next day it warmed up to 50 and rained...

This year, I will make a few passes with the blade on my tractor... and call it good.

Wow OP.. I had the Weather channel on and figured you were getting dumped on up there.

Yes..buy a snowblower and it wont snow. Been there.  Want it to rain? Set up a tent... Want dry weather? Plant a big garden...  Want wind?  Start charcoal for a grill....

Haven't figured out if I want snow bad enough to DO something to MAKE it happen.. :)

Plant a crop of soybeans and corn, gamble on them producing enough to do it all over gain the next year and they will ALL happen at the worst possible times, sequentially, more times than not!  :P

Happiness is watching the snow slide gracefully off of the roof of your new barn, that happiness is some what tempered when you remember that is where you parked the tractor.....  :-X

LOL  John.   Reminds of a time at the old Menards store where my mother worked.  They front awning was huge and not steep enough.   We were in the back shopping and over the inter-calm Jessica the clerk says  " Calling all folks who parked directly in front of the store.. please come to the front and bring a shovel"....   All SIX cars were completely buried.   A few cracked windshields and a LOT of laughter.   What was neat was there was like 20 people shoveling..laughing ..   all coming together to help dig those cars out.    One lady was happy she decided to take her kids in with her.

Its not a shopping store anymore..but its still a Menards.  They put cones out there in front so folks cant park there in the winter time.

It wasn't snowing when I parked my tractor there.  It's a tractor, I just need to clean off the seat and drive away.

We got about 6 inches a few weeks ago, then it almost completely melted away except for very shady spots. It was supposed to snow last night but none fell. It's all dry out there today.

Wow OP..  I'm a bit shocked. The weather channel showed all that purple ( 10+ inches) up there that I thought for sure you'd be dumped on.

I agree with John.... Bubbleboy.  :)

Funny you should use that term. That's what residents here call it. We seem to have our own biosphere in this valley. When I first moved here, I started calling it Shangri-La.
My friends, 4 miles to the east, have 5" of snow in their yards this morning.
The planting guides show Zone 3 all around us. They have us at Zone 4.5. In actuality, it probably more like Zone 5+.

OP

Perhaps a function of mountainous terrain, is the feature of "micro" climate zones.  I can see changes in temperature over the variations just my property.

Areas where I see frost in isolated areas, when obviously the temperature has not gone below freezing in others.   I have a lot of contour, and a lot of foliage, which can result in temperature changes of a few degrees.

Bodies of water, and large geographical formations, also have a significant effect.  The Columbia river "corridor" which is not far away tends to moderate the climate in this area.  This is a relatively recent change since the introduction of the many dams on the Columbia, which have produced large "lakes " some of which are over 300 feet deep.  There are large canyons associated with the drainage's that feed the Columbia and  tend to allow passage of the associate warmer air further inland.

If you go outside of this "corridor" in any direction then the weather changes.

Weather prediction over larges areas is complex to say the very least.

That's exactly the situation here. A dam went in in 1979. Prior to that, according to the Old Timers, it was not unusual to get 5 feet of snow in the valley. Since this huge reservoir was created, we don't even get the rain we used to.
Couple that with mountain ranges on both sides, and you have a similar effect you'd have in a greenhouse with a tub of water to hold the heat of the day. There are many times, today included, where there are storm clouds all around the valley, with a "hole" right over us. It's sun shinning right now, even though the area in general is under a Winter Storm Watch.

The big main stem dams in the Missouri River River basin have altered the weather here, as well.  The weather patterns were affected most noticeably, soon after they were completed back in the '50s & '60s.  Large weather systems are drastically re-routed, enhanced or degraded as they approach or pass these areas.  We are ALWAYS on the line between these major highs & lows......you can just about guarantee it when viewing weather reports, consequently they are almost NEVER correct in their prognostications! >:(

Prognostication = prophesy. That is much kinder than calling it a WAG.

The other thing about our area is that we are in a "radar shadow" from two mountain ranges for either the Idaho or southern Montana weather radars. It can be snowing here, and radar shows nothing. Conversely, if moisture shows up on the radar, the clouds are necessarily so high the precipitation evaporates before it reaches the ground.  :-\

This is just to remind all our brothers and sisters in FL, and the Gulf States why they shouldn't complain about having no snow and ice in the winter, and make them appreciate just where they are!

Yup....that video pretty much sums it up.    That very last one...what did the plow fall down into?  Anyone know?

I remember being in the clinic a few winters ago when we had more ice than snow.  The doctor I had looked haggard.. so I teased him about it.  He commented that he was on call all weekend and with the latest ice storm he had over 45 broken bones and 9 concussions to deal with.  We then thought we should invest in the 'plaster' industry...

It is snowing here as I type this. I'm sure my 6600" elevation has something to do with it.

Nope.

Been quite busy lately. I found two sections of copper line for my evaporative cooler had frozen and busted, so I went and bought some poly tubing to try this year. Got some more aspen pads too, and cleaned all the scale from the hard water out of it. Then it started raining on and off 3 days ago and it turned to snow today. The wind has been pretty constant too.

We also just bought a used SUV and on the way home got a nice bullseye rock chip and the check engine light came on. We've been back and forth to a couple of different mechanics with that one. Amazing how a car can drive great when you test drive it and then as soon as you hand over the cash, it starts showing problems.

So to round up my totally off-topic post, I'll just say that a $10 Bluetooth OBD2 scanner module from amazon combined with a $5 "torque" Android app is an amazing tool that tells me everything my mechanic's $750 scanner did. Reads trouble codes, searches online for the manufacturer specific information related to those codes. Gives you a ton of gauges at your fingertips, and the screen will even project a mirror image onto your windshield from the phone to give you a heads up display. It also uses the phones accelerometer to tell you your 0-60 time and your 1/4 mile time as well (if you have a safe and legal spot to check them). And you can clear the trouble codes after reading them (possibly why the check engine light wasn't on when we bought the vehicle).

http://www.amazon.com/Vgate-ELM327-Bluetooth-Scanner-ANDROID/dp/B00AAOOQJC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1399565111&sr=8-2&keywords=obd2

Above is the scanner. this just plugs into your car's OBD2 Onboard Diagnostics port, usually right under the drivers side dash.

Here is the link to the Android app...

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque

Take a minute to scroll through the screen shots from the app. It gives you an idea of some of the capabilities.

I was amazed how well the scan features worked. My mechanic showed trouble codes related to a misfire on cylinder 7. The little scanner and phone app showed the same codes. When you click the codes, it automatically searches the internet for the definitions and actually gave me a more detailed explanation than his scanner did. If I was a mechanic I'd have one of these in every one of my work trucks for quick scans of customer vehicles before towing, for example.

Thanks for the links..I am a big fan of do it yourself, and if I can save myself a trip to the "truck doctor", that?s a good thing.  The going rate here is $65/hour, and that if before you add in parts.  .. J
