Trout lures.

Headed up to the BWCA for a week on Sunday with my Stepfather.  I hear they have trout up n those waters and that is one fish I have never caught.  Been looking around to get an idea of what kind of lures to use but I am always looking for your input.

from what I understand Panther Martin makes some good lures, especially domino colors, Mepps wolf spoons and comet minnows, the ol hook and worm, pistol petes, and "rooster tails"

what kind of set up do you use?  I'm guessing mostly lake trout up there maybe some rainbows o browns?

I've had good luck with spinners, spoons, jigs, and especially Kastmasters.  Powerbait works great as well.  I would suggest a couple Kastmasters, maybe in a couple different sizes.  Get at least one silver and one brass/gold.  Trout are picky with things like that.  Ask anyone whose fished for trout in the High Sierras.  One day they hit silver minnows and green Powerbait, the next day it's rooster tails and red, white, and blue Powerbait.

In bigger clear water I've used blue and silver Little Cleos.  I like you panther martins and small mepps rooster tails tho - my fav lures  for brookies.  There's one  - a black blade with yellow dots that we used to use with great success..

I am more of a fly kind of guy, but around here (southern interior of British Columbia) people use wedding bands a lot.

Rooster tails P. Martins & Mepps are about the top 3 for me when spincasting, but I do have some flies on an inline spinner too. There are some nice trout lakes up there. I hiked into one just off Sucker/Moose lake one year just to fish one of the smaller lakes. Had a blast!

Another nod here for Rooster Tails, Mepps, Panther Martins and Super Dupers! Occasionally I will add a Salmon egg if legal in the area I am in.

RT's my favorites are Red Barrel, Red Feather and Silver spinner or Black/Gold fleck barrel, Black feather and Gold spinner.

Mepps: Red/Gold

Panther Martins: Black Yellow

Thanks guys. I am really trying to keep my gear to a minimum but an effective one at that. Powerbait, gives me head aches when I look it up cuz there is a ton of stuff called power bait. What specifically are you talking about? the Dough ball things? the worms?

I've always just used Powerbait in the jar.  You take a pinch and roll it into a ball and shove a small treble hook into it.  You pay more for the pre-made balls or nuggets.

I will suggest the Orange or Red ""Eggs" that come in the lil jars, if ya wanna use the stuff.


It is "killer", in running water for me. Didn't use it on the lakes...  Kinda wish I had now that ya are mentioning it..
 ;)


Maybe later this year...


I need a trip to the BWCA again.
