Title: Leather pouches
Post by: Forest Turtle on July 18, 2012, 11:57:28 AM
Last days I had spent with some small leatherwork and tailor three pouches for flint & steel or tinder. Biggest one is coloured with onion peels, dark one is industrially surface coloured and last is thin goat leather macerated in walnut leaves infusion. Colouring / macerating I made few weeks ago. ;-) Wooden buttons are made of curly birch leftovers. I like leatherwork very much & it's relax for my brain. Now I'm starting another project with thick cow hide.

And all together...

I like those , FT!    Is that the square button you were showing us how to make on that one bag?

Agreed, those are gorgeous. I've been meaning to do something similar for some time now. I just need a couch to cannibalize...

TheHumbleBlivit: I had purchased pouch leather as leather jacket in second hand shop for little money. ;-)

Those came out nice, Forest Turtle.  I like the wooden buttons.  I might have to give that a shot.  I also think I need to check out the local thrift stores for some cheap leather.  Thanks for sharing.

  Forest Turtle!

I really like these!

What material did ya use to sew the "seams"? They are hidden in the bags. So not know....

They look great! I would like to see a thread about how you make the onion peel dye. It looks good and I imagine it's probably pretty easy on the environment compared to commercial dyes.

Thanks all! :-)

MnS: I use cobblers thread or linen "blacksmith's" thread.

PW: onion dye is very simple to make. Just get enough onion peels (in proportion to liquid contain) into pot and boil for half an hour. More peels = darker colour of hide you have in finish. Then put wet (this is crucial for success!) leather in and let it over night there. If is leather thin (1-2mm) it's enough, thick leather can be soaked for days. After dry it's possible to repeat process several times until colour is dark and intensive enough.

Those are nice and thanks for the info on the onion dye too. I want to make one to hang around my neck for a small fire kit and to hold a tinder bundle. What are the best shapes to start out with on the leather patterns?

Thanks for the reply!  I am guessing you use red onions? Does it impart an onion scent to the leather?

PW: I don't know exact name, we call it "kitchen onion." Here is the picture:

And yes, leather get slightly onion smell but after beeswax it's gone.

Barbarossa Bushman: for your first pouch try simple 2 part pouch. Shape of each part is trapezoid which narrow end is turned down. Better than describing is picture below:

Another work done. Buttons (left to right) apple wood, curly birch, walnut. Biggest pouch can easily hold about a half of kilogram of lentil. I was very busy dealing with old projects, now I have to have some rest.  ;)
