Title: Italian Canvas Backpacks
Post by: Wilderbeast on October 02, 2012, 07:13:15 AM
I just got in these rugged Italian backpacks. They are made of durable canvas with padded straps and the 2 outside pockets have laces that makes them adjustable. Overall height 15", Depth 5", Width 14". Side pockets Depth 2", Height 14.5", Width 5".

This is a really nice piece that makes a great day pack and if you pack carefully can easily be an overnight weekend pack.  It has straps on the bottom to secure a bedroll, expandable side pockets that swallow a nalgene.

They are in new condition.

These are $35 plus shipping.  Makes a great budget option to a Frost River or Duluth canvas pack.

They are a nice pack.  It looks to me like the straps are pretty easily upgradeable with just a little effort.

Not necessary unless you are carrying a really heavy load, but nice to see it can be done.

Just got mine today!  WOW is it nice!  Bigger than I thought.  The shoulder straps are a tad short for a big fat guy, but it works great and easy to mod if I want an extra few inches.

Mine looks new.  No rust or scuffing on the hardware.  WAAAY cool pack!  This is like THE bag I've been looking for.  Great day bag so I can leave my MALICE pack with my 3-day gear and my drop-bag with my hammock and base-camp stuff.

I received one of these packs today and an Alice frame to rig it on. I hope that this combo will work well. Great price for a great piece of gear.

Don't know if you still have these around beast, but here is a quick mod I did to one of these packs last year.  100x better!

Since this seems to be a useful and easy modification I'll include a set of LC II woodland alice shoulder straps with any purchase for an additional $10.

I have a couple of these Italian rucks left and I'll be getting more in the next week or two.  All in new/unused condition, same price.

Thanks all

Drop me a PM when you get the next batch of these in,  thanks mike.

I'm James, but Howie did end up getting this pack from me! :P  Then it traveled to a few other people via another board, getting many more mods along the way.. including cordlocks, faxtex buckles.

Now I'm almost wishing I didn't trade mine!

If you want one, you know it can easily be arranged.  I'll have a package heading your way in a couple of days in any case. :)

FYI for those interested, I checked my invoice and these were new packs and the ones coming next week will also be in the same condition.

So 2 left and a bunch more on the way.

Just wanted to say, I picked one of this up a few months back from Wilderbeast and it is a great pack. If you are thinking of getting one, get one, great price and a nice pack. Much more comfortable than my medium Fox Sports Tactical pack. I have taken it squirrel hunting several times and it holds a fair amount of gear and a few squirrels as well;)

I got a couple off of WB not long ago. Mine were in great (maybe new?) condition. The size is great for an EDC or day pack. I'd imagine most of us could use it on an overnighter too if you strapped your sleep system to the bottom.
I plan on drilling the rivets out and redoing the whole thing in leather straps and brass hardware. I mixed up some paraffin/beeswax for the wax coating last night.

Dang. And I thought I was being original. Oh well.

I believe the pack Woods used was a forest service pack.  Any time you customize a pack you are still being original, they will be unique to you.

Take a look at the inside of the Italian ruck before you beeswax it.  I think it has a water resistant coating already so you may want to test a small area before you give it the full treatment.

Yeah I noticed that. Figured the worst that could happen would be it melting when I hit it with some heat. Any discoloration will give it some character  ;)

Do the straps on these packs adjust out enough for a big guy?

They have a pretty good range of adjustment and can be easily modified to extend them further.

Do the straps on these packs adjust out enough for a big guy?

I am 6'2", a 3-X shirt (used to be a 58" chest...getting old and busted...I'm thinking a 52" now).  Mine fits fully adjusted out and sits high on my back, but it is comfy and rides really well.  I am wanting to do an ALICE strap conversion for more room, but haven't yet.  (Mike, I knew I was forgetting to order something! ~LOL~  Next order!)

I ordered one of these packs as well and I agree, leather straps would be the perfect finishing touch to make them really look great. They are a perfect day pack size. And when I get time to mod mine I will probably add a couple of buckles to the side pocket flaps as well just to round out the aesthetics.

With the right mods these could be made to look like a pack costing well over $100.

And as for waterproofing I am positive mine has a plastic liner in the bottom to protect the contents from setting it down on wet ground.

The inside of the top lid and the inside of the bottom of the pack have a rubberized coating on them as do the lids on the side pockets.  The body of the pack is plain canvas.

Recent change, actually.. Roundabouts the beginning of this year. I used to be able to send small parcels to Canada for a couple bucks but now it's $4 and change. I can send stuff to the UK cheaper.

Just wanted to give an update on these great backpacks. Jontok graciously sent the wife and I a pair of Wilderbeast's  backpacks for birthday gifts. These packs are the bomb! They hold more than they appear to handle, thick canvas with a water resistant coating inside. The pack as is fits my wife perfectly, she is 5'8". I'm a fraction over 6' and the pack was a little tight on my shoulders. I replaced the original straps with some Alice straps and lengthened the bottom straps so that they can carry my wool blanket or shelter half with a woobie. Now the pack is VERY comfortable and rides well on my back and shoulders.

These packs can be great as daypacks or even for a long weekend loadout! They are easy to modify and are bomb proof! Thanks again to Jontok for the packs and thanks to Wilderbeast for the great pack selection!

I am always looking for a comfortable way to carry whatever I need to carry. Going heavy or going light.  Well, I just found the best carry ever. I added Tactical Tailor shoulder straps to my ruck.

This shoulder rig is astonishing.

Had mine going on two years now; still love it.  I use it nearly every week to haul Scout junk, haul it around as a daypack at camp.  Only change Ive made is I added a BnB patch to the flap.  I am planning to replace the funky metal clips with plastic modular clips.  I did find a molle pouch will (barely) fit in the strap across the front.
