Title: Making a longbow
Post by: SwampHanger on February 01, 2013, 02:27:15 PM
Alright Treez posted up a great site and picks of a bow he built.  So I have to start mine as this was the year to build one. I'm following the directions online and I'm already waiting for the handle to dry so I can put backing on it.

Nice :)
I've made a couple of bows myself.
The one that I hunt with is 66" and pulls around 60# @ 27".

Glued on the backing this morning. Tomorrow will be fun as I can start trimming and tillering the limbs.

That's cool as hell, good on ya. What did you use for backing? Get it done and we can shoot some Nile Perch. Peace

Nice! This will be fun to follow. I like that perspective shot where the two lines for the taper look parallel in the picture. :D

I was trying to get a grain shot but it does look cool. Got the tillering done today. Followed the directions close as possible but it turned out around 30-35 lb. Still need to cut out the handle and build the shelf. Looks like the Bride will be getting a custom bow for Valintines day!

Alright shaped the handle to fit my wife's hand. Just  got to pick up some stain and order some string making supplies. I must say this was a lot of fun and really did not take as long as I thought. Now I have the bug. Gonna make a canoe trip soon for a little Pignut Hickory.

Well the directions said you could use a few materials but I used painters cloth. Already had it and it works now to experiment on how to finish it. I just read a cool way of making a sleeve with fiberglass and two ton epoxy. This may be Frankin Bow by the time I'm done but ill figure out the take down part.

To make it a take down you might need to build a new riser and a way to reinforce the end of the limbs where they attach to
it. Maybe glue an extra layer of wood to the end of the limbs about 6" or so long and then make sure the riser is thick and reinforced as well. Then you can use "nutserts" in the riser to accept screws to hold the limbs in place. Might be a good Idea to look at a commercial take down bow to get some ideas.

PW ill add the link when I get home but there is a site that shows how to do it. They use already built bows and make it out of fiberglass and 2ton epoxy. Very cool concept.

You fellows should check out the 'The Traditional Bowyers Bible' series, Vol. 1-4. I have the first two and both are fantastic.

I have the vol. 1. This build just got me over my intimation of tillering. It's not hard at all.

Gotta little stain on it. I ordered a couple of strings from 3Rivers Archery so maybe by Friday the Bride will be chunking arrows down range.

His order was put in the other night. Told me his fiberglass one wasn't good enough anymore. Time we get done with these kids they may get their own show!

Man that's a great job on your first one. But we need to see the money shot, see how that puppie bends. Glad to see others in the tribe are building. Now for a get together and do some shooting.
Thanks for sharing.

I'll get one up soon. I've got a small hickory someone wants me to remove for them so I'll soon have another project.

Shoots great I just got to get the bride to get a pic of me shooting it. Gonna take it to the krac meet. Get some people interested. It was easy.
